Flooded yard-help!

We got a bunch of trees taken down and now have our own private pond..complete with ducks that visited yesterday! My husband bought a pump to drain it and it literally pumps all day for days and doesn't look like any change even though we can tell it is working..once it's dry we hope to find free fill and get it leveled and have the drainage fixed..any ideas for us to get this fixed more quickly? Would like to plant grass and have a yard for the summer.

Is this a new house to you?

We moved to our house 2 years ago and also had ponding and very wet soil. We had drainage installed last year.

This is our second year in the house. Last winter it got wet but once trees were taken down it is bad. Our neighborhood has a man made pond diagonally behind our house to collect drainage from neighborhood I believe. There are houses higher up so we may be collecting their water. We have a French drain so luckily there are no issues with water in our house but since this is the lowest level in the yard it collects here.

That water either needs to soak into your soil or drain off. The reason it smells is the water cuts off the availability of oxygen to the beneficial (aerobic) soil microbes and they are now dead and stinky. What will happen in that spot is the vegetation will transform from turf type to swamp type grasses. I have been in a home for nearly 2 years and just this month noticed I have the same problem. We got 3.5 inches of rain over 2 weeks ago and I still have 1 inch of standing water out in the north corner of the lot (I don't get out there much). You can dig a trench to a collection point that is lower or you can fill it in and let the water drain to another collection point. Ideally that collection point would be a legitimate drainage point like a gutter in front of your house. What I am going to do is spray the area with shampoo. Shampoo will help the water drain into the soil. When that does not work, I'll carve a swale out to the ditch (no curbs in the country) and let it drain that way. Hi indycat: Sorry to hear about your pond situation. My pond is only 1,000 gallons and I had a major blowup with my sprinkler system irrigation. It burst underground - right next to my new pond - and it leaked water into my pond and created a big flooded mess. This went on overnight and I had no idea it was even happening until I woke up the next morning to see my entire backyard flooded! Thankfully, I was able to get it fixed within a few days. At 1,000 gallons, it took 4 - 5 days to clear up where I could finally see the fish and bottom again. Since your pond is so large, it might take up to a month to clear up. It WILL eventually settle - just give it some time. After mine settled completely, I did partial water changes (20%) about every week with a wet/dry vacuum and it eventually got rid of all the mud at the bottom of the pond. You could probably start doing partial water changes now to get a jumpstart. I just waited it out until I could see that all my pondlife was ok. Good luck.

Hi Chic, Do all the heads work while this pipe pumps water? Is it just one zone or others as well? Does it have a finished or rough end? Cap the pipe and see if that take care of it. A cap may have come off it from water hammer. Check around the area for a cap and glue it back on. Aloha

If you want foot traffic through those areas to be mud-free, and if you don't want to utilize that wonderful moisture for vegetation, then put down gravel for a firmer footing. If gravel proves too watery for feet, then put down concrete. That will whisk the water away anywhere you want to send it. Or if you don't like hardscape, a raised wooden walkway could get you where you need to go and keep your socks dry. What would nature do? That damp area would explode with vegetation. Nature doesn't like to waste water. Central Florida natives like Wax Myrtle, Dwarf Palmetto, or Horsetail Rush could soak it all up within a few years. Check out the Bog Gardening forum for ideas.

Thanks yes we have another smaller pond directly behind our yard and a large pond made when they built our development for this reason I believe. I am not sure how to go about getting approval for the drainage to go directly to that pond..I just got off the phone with a guy who is possibly going to give us some fill for free!! the pumping/draining will need to be figured out. I have seen trucks come and pump flooded parking lots at the school I used to work at and they take it away. What type of company would do something like that?

Aren't there laws you must follow about diverting water? Better check with your city hall.
