Thank you! I have made a search based on your suggestions. It looks like the 2. one is Pachyphytum compactum and the 3. one is Pachyphytum oviferum. I still hope someone can confirm this.

No problem. That one looks like Pachyphytum compactum, based on pictures found in Google. :D

Ha! My brain really isn't working today! I ignored the first picture (the group picture), then continued the numbering from there. So it would really be 0, 1, 2, 3. So by number 2, I was talking about the third picture overall.

I still don't think it looks quite right as an Echeveria.

Palms, what do you think it could be? I was thinking echeveria too, but I am not so good at ID-ing them :)

It doesn't look particularly etiolated, but it is still pretty tall, it is in a large clump, and it has an odd leaf shape for Echeveria, thus my doubts...

I am pretty sure it has some Echeveria in it, but the first time I looked at it I thought it looked like a Graptoveria, but not so sure now.

I thought it may be E. elegans (aka. Mexican snowball, Mexican hens & chicks, Mexican rose...) but since not sure I didn't post any ID. Looking at pics like this:

I think #2 is an echeveria, maybe subsessilis? The leaf shape looks similar but it's hard to say, I think it needs more light. Not my plant but check the leaf shape.

As for the other two, I agree with P. compactum and P. oviferum.

Rina: I am glad you like the chubby pachy. :) I like it as well. I am also glad you said that they look very good. I wasn't sure if they are ok or not.

The second one with the air roots looks broken to me, the main stem shriveled and looks like it won't support the top part anymore. I will behead that one.

The first plant, that you said might be an echeveria, I am not sure. Do they grow tree like stems as well? (I don't know anything about them.)

I have been looking at pictures and there is an other plant that looks like this one, it is called Aeonium haworthii. What do you think about this one, can this be the same plant as mine?

Patrick: Thank you for confirming the other two plants! I don't think that the first one would be an Echeveria subsessilis, it doesn't feel the same.

Many rosette type plants look very similar to me, so I am seldom sure :)

Did your plant (echeveria or otherwise) ever bloomed? If so, do you have photos? Blooms are often most helpful to ID plants.

Most aeoniums have ciliate margins = tiny teeth or hairs on leaf margins (I don't see any on your plant). The way leaves are attached is also different, and leaf scars on stems too, but not visible in your photos. Here is a good read & pics -about aeoniums- (written by one of our members I believe :)

I wonder why the stem on the other plant (pachy) is shriveled? Was there an injury? Hope it is not because it started to rot. Cutting and re-rooting may be best.

Hi Rina! Thank you for your answer and for the link! You are right, the aeoniums look different.

The Echeveria has never bloomed for me before. I have repotted it, removed the dry leaves and beheaded it - not fully, I left two rosettes on.

As for the second one, the Pachyphytum compactum: I have beheaded it as well. I was suprised there were three dark brown lines moving up inside its stem. Was that rot? I wasn't sure so I cut it back until I found fully clean stem. It is now healing, I will plant it in a few days, when it is ready. Its soil was quite compact.

I have repotted the chubby Pachy, it is not shriveled on the stem, I have checked it. The soil it was in was very compact and hard like a stone even though it was mostly sand and perlit. Its roots looked healthy, it has many. :) Oh and I have just noticed that it is growing a flower. So I didn't beheaded it.

What do you think how often should I water these plants? I will tell you honestly I was not watering them too often. I mean once a month or so. I planted them now into a coco coir, sand, perlit mixture.

Fine sand does that, at least in my experience. I had been given plant potted in mostly sand, and it was as hard as concrete. Roots can't get enough moisture and can't breathe in that kind of stuff, and eventually either rot or dry up. It doesn't happen overnight, so it may be hard to notice. I never use sand, most ppl don't. Coarse sand is OK, but probably nothing that will pass thru the kitchen strainer - IMO, that would be finest I would ever use if I had to.

Hard & compact soil isn't recommended either, best substrate for succulents is one that drains fast. Many ppl add lots of perlite(at least half of total volume) to their C&S soil; others (including me) use more inorganic mix. Grit, perlite, pumice, scoria, turface and similar are all great to be used to make well draining mixes.

Very experienced growers use sand, but I really can't tell you what kind.

More often than not, any black marks (dots, lines or circles) appear if there is rot. There is very good chance the stem got damaged and water was collecting there - obviously, I am just guessing based on what you posted. I would do exactly as you did, cutting until no dark/black is visible.

Cuttings without roots should not be watered for a while as they have no roots to take in moisture. There is plenty stored in stems and leaves until roots start growing.

Your plants are looking good, so your watering regime was probably ok for whatever they were potted in. In new substrate that you don't have experience with, you could check how moist or dry it is using a bamboo skewer or chopstick - insert deep into pot. If dry after taking out - time to water. If it feels wet/cold and/or has small particles sticking to it, there is still plenty of moisture.

May I ask what is your general location? Looks like you have great sunshine available for your plants...

I live in Hungary in Europe. The window I keep them in is facing east. I live on the 6th floor and there are no buildings in front of us so the room gets full Sun in the morning until early afternoon. The light sometime might be too strong for my plants, since they are indoors in the window. The room is very warm during summer and warm in other seasons. I don't have any room with cold temperature so none of my plants get any cold during winter.

I will not water the cuttings without roots yet. I meant to ask how to water these plants when they have roots. I think I left their soil dry out a few times for too long and maybe that made the soil to get so compacted. They were still in their original soil, that came with them when I bought them. It really was fine sand. The sand I use now in my mix is coarse sand. I am experimenting with it with my Jade plants. It is the coco coir, sand, perlit mix (I have added smaller, 2-4mm pebbles as well into the mix.) that I am testing now. It draines well and dries out in 2-3 days completely.

I am also not sure about fertilizing, when and how often to do that for C&S. I am reading a lot in the forum, there are so many info I feel a bit overwhelmed now.

You said you use more inorganic mixes, how do you fertilize your plants in that soil?

If you keep plants in well draining mix, water generously when mix is almost dry. Same for almost all succulents. Different substrates hold on different amounts of water (and fertilizer if using). In warm environment, watering more often is most likely necessary. I think I would rather fertilize with weaker solution more often, but I do not fertilize succulents (at least I didn't so far, in over 4yrs - maybe I'll try this summer? - and they grow just fine ) so won't be much help here. Overfertilizing isn't healthy for any plant.

When using different materials to make mix, particles should be of similar size.

Can you see that darker ring on the right stem of the echeveria on the right side near the base of the plant? Is that okay? I wasn't sure so I didn't cut the stem there, but I wonder if that is ok or not.

Did you check if that area of stem is soft at all? Could be just that it is old stem, but if you feel any softness it could be sign of rot. If it got damaged while cutting other stems, injury will usually callus and may appear darker. Those are couple you decided not to behead, right? If my plants, I would check for softness and just keep watching to make sure it is not spreading. If so, I would cut it too.

I am not suggesting not using fertilizer, just not to over fertilize if using it. Recommended amounts should be OK, but many ppl suggest using less (1/2 or 1/4 of recommended amount) more often. These plants come from areas with very 'poor' soils - mostly rocky, gravely or even sandy in their natural habitat. Growing them in pots & in our houses is quite a bit different, but generally they are not heavy feeders. You can fertilize them year-round and push for lots of growth and perhaps more flowering, but too much of good think is no good either :) All I am suggesting is restraint...

I have checked the stem and it feels normal, it is not soft at all. I will keep my eye on it.

Please don't do as I do :), but I grow all succulents in a mix of grit, perlite and some turface and do not fertilize them on purpose. What I mean by that is, that since I keep them all outside, when I water my tropical and veggies in the garden and I fertilize those, on very few occasions there could be leftover fertigating solution. It happened probably 3x times (maybe just 2?) last summer, but I would use this leftover solution for succulents. Most of the times, my succulents get watered when it rains. Only if we have prolonged period of no rain, I would water. Last year, I went to Europe for 3 weeks and succulents got only rain water - apparently, it rained 3x while I was away. Not one died...they actually looked quite good. I had said before that I probably will start fertilizing, but so far I didn't. I have best intentions sometimes, haha. I should do some comparison: get few plants, fertilize one half and not fertilize another and see what they look like in about 6mo.

I try to use as much rain water as I can, collecting into few rain barrels I have. Our water where I live is very hard and leaves marks on leaves - even if only used very few times.
