When should I scalp my lawn - when should I 2nd application?
Comments (4)I would wait until it is 95% dead before mowing. Reason - the dead stuff will mow up pretty easy. When you come to a still-live patch, that mower will bog like there is no tomorrow. Ran into this Tuesday. I think you can do the second ap of Roundup as soon as you can tell what is died or is on its way to being dead and what you missed. I could have done my second ap 5 days after the first once I saw what I had missed but I waited until 7 days after due to time conflicts. And for a second ap, you only need to hit the areas you missed, not the whole yard again....See MoreWhen should I consider a cutting to have rooted?
Comments (1)first.. i would tip it out of the pot.. and look ... if that failed... i would grab the trunk.. and gently tug... if it has roots... the soil will start to buckle indicating roots are down there ... resisting the stick being easily pulled out ... and if that failed... i would bare root it when the leaves turn color and fall off ... and find out ... and then repot it ... boy.. it made it thru the heat of summer.. holding leaves... one must imagine... there are roots down there ... i might give it a week or two before you do it.... its supposed to be 90s here fro me.. for a couple days ... ken...See MoreWhen should I transplant new cuttings to in-ground
Comments (7)A few months ago, while pruning my trees, I removed the leaves from a few short branches and stuck them in a pot of soil. I promptly ignored them. Low and behold, they have rooted and now sport a set of leaves (don't get me started with all of the pampering I did with my winter cuttings and my With these being so young and tender, should I bring them inside for the winter -or- go ahead and let them go dormant and move them to the garage? From Lou's prior comment, he doesn't let them go dormant ... what is the pro/con for this? Both cuttings, as you can see, are tip growth and very green (have not hardened at all.) The left branch is from a Sultane the right is an Alma. One other thing ... at some point I will need to separate these into their own pots ... when should I do this? -Steve...See MoreWhen should I cut back rootstock
Comments (0)When should I cut back the rootstock of a grafted sugar maple? on Saturday I grafted a a piece of soft budwood from a sugar maple in my great aunts yard onto a sugar maple sapling I baught from amazon to use as rootstalk. I used the veneer graft method but left the terminal shout on the top of the rootstalking growing hoping to feed the graft as it heals. Should I leave it growing or cut it back to feed energy into the scion? The reason Im grafting this is because my great aunt the one the tree belonged to passed away a few years ago and Im trying to grow this in her memory. Does anybody have any tips on caring for this graft? Should I keep the rootstalk growing until the graft heals or snip the terminal growth tip on? Thanks....See MoreLauren (Zone 9a)
