When should I cut back rootstock

When should I cut back the rootstock of a grafted sugar maple? on Saturday I grafted a a piece of soft budwood from a sugar maple in my great aunts yard onto a sugar maple sapling I baught from amazon to use as rootstalk. I used the veneer graft method but left the terminal shout on the top of the rootstalking growing hoping to feed the graft as it heals. Should I leave it growing or cut it back to feed energy into the scion?

The reason Im grafting this is because my great aunt the one the tree belonged to passed away a few years ago and Im trying to grow this in her memory. Does anybody have any tips on caring for this graft? Should I keep the rootstalk growing until the graft heals or snip the terminal growth tip on? Thanks.

Not sure this is the right place for my question but since columbine seem to be the topic here I thought I might give it a try. I, unlike Jayco, do not want my columbine to re-seed. It has taken over the place. It is blooming right now and today I pulled up a couple wheel barrels full of columbine. My question is, looking at all that I thought it would make for a great mulch in some other areas of the place but I don't know if since it is already blooming if it will just go to seed any way and end up spreading even more. Like a dandelion bloom if you pick the flower and drop it, it will make seed even after being picked. Chances are the columbine have been pollinated. I appreciate any help. Mashell

Thank you! I will do that asap. It was on the windowsill of my laundry room most of the time but we had our furnace go out in February and it took them a couple of weeks to get the replacement in so I put it in the living room overnight because the laundry room was getting so cold. And I only gave it a few mls of water a week aside from spritzing it down daily with the water bottle--thank you so much for that tip!
