I haven't seen that type of leaf curling, but otherwise it does look like the soil doesn't drain well enough. These plants often grow as epiphytes in areas of high rainfall and humidity. A lot of nursery soils are deliberately heavy to reduce the number of waterings (labour costs) and long term this causes problems if you don't change the soil. Once plants are weakened or damaged this way then various pathogens have an "open doorway".

I have medinela speciosa. Almost similar, with smaller leaves and edible fruits. Too specific in habitat. Prefer humid mountain environment to produce perfect flower and fruit. When i brought it down to 50m above sea level, complex problems occur. Tiny flowers, abnormal leaves, bugs fragile, etc.. yeah, still alive tho, but not much interesting to see..

Hi Gudang...I wasn't too familiar with your medinilla had to google. It looks very similar to my medinilla myriantha. Wonder if its the same plant, though I doubt mine is edible. Here's mine taken a few months ago. Its just now starting to bloom again...it took Spring off. My favorite (bloom wise) is the magnifica. Gorgeous blooms!

Yeah, almost identic in both leaf and flower, but speciosa have lil bigger fruit, like mini grape, and it's edible even the taste too acid for table fruit.

Sadly, I'm still not sure what the deal is with my plant. In desperation, I've cut off all the effected leaves and repotted into a well-draining orchid mix. I'm tempted to put it in my greenhouse (high humidity, warm, super bright, etc.) but am worried about putting it in there with all my (healthy) orchids, until I know what the weird spotting was?
Any thoughts?

I wish I had the answer for you...I've had some issues ( similar but different) that some of my magnifica leaves had also. I sprayed mine with Bonide all season horticultural oil. Unfortunately, a few weeks go after I watered it I accidentally left it in full sun for a few hours and sunburned a lot of the leaves...**sigh** its in the shade now but a lot of the leaves shriveled up and has fallen off. The hort. oil has helped but not sure if that is what you are dealing with?

Have you seen any bugs on yours?

Nice to see yours blooming. Mine has been indoors for several years. No luck. I put it out this summer.

I have really hunted the worldwide web for this reddish disease. If it is a fungus, It is worth treating, and can work well. Your plant is just so stunning.

If I were you I would try to eliminate the concern it has a virus. I did find a few references to reddish spotting and curling leaves, where the only recommendation at the few sites I found, was burning the plant. A positive note, is that these viruses I found, were not on plants at all similar to yours. Good luck. I hope you find an answer.

Laurie, I'm beginning to wonder if it might be armored scale? After googling it some of the photos I've seen look similar.
