My first Monarch caterpillar of the season!
Comments (6)Seems like the Monarchs are returning. I have about 20 cats and released 7 beautiful Monarch's Sunday. However I haven't found any more eggs yet. I think the cold, wind and rain the last few days have kept them away. Hopefully that is over now and we can see them on the increase. I'm ready. Hope...See Moremy first two caterpillars are missing...
Comments (10)Lolly318 - I'm in northeastern NC and started my butterfly garden this year as well. Last week, I decided to check my parsley plants and found 12 cats on one plant. The other parsley plant was a little wilted so I gave it some water to revive it. The next day, there were eggs on the second plant. I am running out of parsley for these hungry guys. I now have 8 cats remaining and I have brought them inside and feeding them fresh parsley from the grocery store (I know - I just read that you shouldn't do this but there is nothing left on the parsley plant for them to eat!). Next year, we will start parsley from seed to have enough plants. I brought them inside yesterday and have them in an aquarium type container. Tonight I have to transfer them to another container so I can clean the container they are in now. They poop a lot. I hope to hear from you more since I am new at butterfly gardening as well. I'm pretty sure that my cats are black swallowtails. I plan on planting milkweed next year to attract Monarchs. This year was just an experiment for me. Talk to you soon. Comments (10)Thanks Susan I'm in Milford Pennsylvania in gold key lake estates, basically a forest by 3 lakes and swamps lol I have its container open so it can emerge and adequately spread/dry it's wings in a contained and controlled room. I did the same for my polyphemus moth and it worked out very well and she mated almost immediately after I brought her outside, with gloves, careful not to damage her wings. Also have the option of opening the window screen if it's difficult to catch it etc. Thanks again:)...See MoreAck! I lost my first caterpillars, where did they go??
Comments (3)Oh yay! I had no idea they did that! I thought they just stayed on the food source the whole time. My sister did see them the day before they went missing and she said they were gigantic compared to when we first found them so perhaps it was time to move on to the next stage. Docmom, the parsley was and is huge and only had one caterpillar on it (that I could see) which is why I found it strange that he was gone as well...as surely HE had enough to eat. All plants outdoors - I should have said "there are no birds in my back yard, I assume because of the *feline* cat enclosure." :) My plant beds are as wide open as can be but I never ever see birds. I'm actually *trying* to attract them with baths, houses and seed - I have a huge grasshopper problem. I always chalked it up to too many kitties nearby - albeit restrained and unable to pounce....See MoreRhonda
