My first Monarch caterpillar of the season!
Comments (6)Seems like the Monarchs are returning. I have about 20 cats and released 7 beautiful Monarch's Sunday. However I haven't found any more eggs yet. I think the cold, wind and rain the last few days have kept them away. Hopefully that is over now and we can see them on the increase. I'm ready. Hope...See MorePuzzled about size difference of two caterpillars
Comments (5)Okay, this is weird. I have six of the fat guys. One made his sling yesterday. Two made slings today. One more got into position to make a sling. I keep them in the monarch castle and it has a black edging around the inside. That is where all my BSTs pupate, except for the one that pupated on top of another one last year! One of them has made the sling in the lining and is hanging down the side. It looks so weird. And the one inch guy? Well, it is very hard to say because he is up against the plastic see through section, but it sure looks like he is pupating there! I think he attached himself to plastic! Maybe the poor thing didnt have the energy to climb to the top. I dont know about these guys. They are a little strange. Even when there was plenty of food, I would often find two or three practically eating on top of each other....See MoreAck! I lost my first caterpillars, where did they go??
Comments (3)Oh yay! I had no idea they did that! I thought they just stayed on the food source the whole time. My sister did see them the day before they went missing and she said they were gigantic compared to when we first found them so perhaps it was time to move on to the next stage. Docmom, the parsley was and is huge and only had one caterpillar on it (that I could see) which is why I found it strange that he was gone as well...as surely HE had enough to eat. All plants outdoors - I should have said "there are no birds in my back yard, I assume because of the *feline* cat enclosure." :) My plant beds are as wide open as can be but I never ever see birds. I'm actually *trying* to attract them with baths, houses and seed - I have a huge grasshopper problem. I always chalked it up to too many kitties nearby - albeit restrained and unable to pounce....See MoreFirst Red Admiral Caterpillar, and First Spicebush Swallowtail Eggs
Comments (4)I'll certainly post pictures, Melissa! I have my work cut out alright, Mary! I brought home a group of pipevine swallowtail caterpillars from RickinLA's pipevines. His property is so beautiful! He's even got a beautiful lake in his backyard! I've decided to go ahead and raise all these myself, so I'll get out another cage tomorrow to give them plenty of room. I've left them on the porch tonight, but I covered the cage they're in as well as the one that holds the other cats I'm raising. It's turned cold, only 52 degrees out now, supposed to go into the 40's. We had a mild winter, but it was a long one, since it's still going on now! Sherry...See More- 16 years ago
