How to pack ficus lyrata for a long international flight
Comments (2)Ampersand is right....I'd be very surprised if Vietnam will let you just carry live plants into the county without permits. I know if you were coming to the U.S. it wouldn't be nearly that simple and probably not even possible. You might have much better luck just packing them very well into a box and sending them via some international package delivery service (fed ex, DHL, etc). But even then you'll be asked if the package contains live plants and fibbing about it could get you in some real trouble. I certainly wouldn't risk Vietnam prison for a few figs. You can probably google Vietnam agriculture importation or the like and find out how to get permission, go through quarantine, etc. Good luck...and be careful. You don't want to get stopped at customs with undeclared live plants! I once accidently brought an apple into the U.S. on an international flight and when they found it they literally treated it and me as if it was a bomb!! They took it extremely serious and I'm lucky I didn't end up with a huge fine. good luck....See MoreFlight zone?
Comments (4)June - you don't have to be in a "flight zone" to attract them. Those who actually live in the path report dozens and dozens at their feeders during migration, with some residents the rest of the season. However, if you plant some of the plants suggested here and elsewhere (eg., bee balm, salvia, native honeysuckles, etc) or even hang some baskets of fuchsias and plant some of the bean vines (scarlet runner, hyacinth bean), and hang a feeder and/or something red, there's a very good chance that they will come to investigate what you have and will start hanging out - returning year after year....See MoreSS Support - Mon. 10/29 thru Sun. 11/4
Comments (49)Good Friday morning! Raeanne, bon voyage. I am so glad you got that package in time LOL! Have fun. John, see the effect you have on women! Sounds like you were the perfect gentleman. Good luck sleuthing, I mean babysitting! Hopefully they pay more for babysitting than .50 an hour that I was paid years ago. LOL Maddie, I am still trying to figure out how I can pull NYC off in December. I am in on the exchange too. Besh, have you given any thought to NYC? Good job on Dee's package BJ! Have fun at your planning party tonight. Planning is the key. Dee, enjoy all those lovely gifts! What a fun package to receive. Speaking of planning I have my carriage club's planning meeting tomorrow night. This is where we plan all the events for 2008. It's a pot luck (ugh) but I plan on being prepared for good eating with what I bring. I have to get a photo of this but will share so you can imagine what I am seeing: About 2 miles from my house is a lovely farm with big fields on both sides of the road and a lovely antique colonial home. The fields host flocks of sheep all summer and fall. On my way home Halloween evening someone had delivered to both fields huge piles of pumpkins for the sheep to eat. So I am driving along taking this all in. The sheep, some with black faces, eating from these huge piles of pumpkin, the setting sun filtering through the trees giving off this warm cast of oranges and golds through the leaves and a old man (presumably grandfather) standing next to this tow headed boy who is petting one of the sheep through the fence. It was all too beautiful. I will try to get a photo of the sheep and pumpkins but I doubt I the camera will ever be able to capture what is in my mind's eye. I hope you can imagine it....See MoreSS Support Mon.,Nov. 12 thru Sun. Nov. 18th
Comments (32)Good Evening all, I can't believe that I have been away all week. I have had an interesting week and it just got away from me. Let me get you up to speed. I had Monday off and DH went back to work after being out 2 weeks with his knee. However, Monday I had to bring DS to the Dr. He ended up having bronchitis. I had to bring him back again on Wed. because he could not breath. Now he is on 3 different meds and doing much better. I had a colonoscopy today, so I know that many of you know what the day before is like. Yikes. I survived and am finally back to my self. I was pretty groggy all day today and it felt good to just crash on the couch all day with a good excuse and not feeling guilty for not doing anything else! I also got news this week about a $1.8 million deficit in the school budget and there will probably be some major layoffs, soon. I'm not sure if I will be one of them, but usually the libraries and technology get cut before teachers. I am trying to get my ducks in a row and get a resume together, because it looks like a new job may be in my future. :-) and ;-(. I have very mixed emotions about it. Is anyone here any good a resumes? Anyone want to take a look at mine and tell me what needs to be improved upon? I really could use the help. Muchas Gracias. Maddie, I am really glad that this week is over for you. I am sorry I missed out on the gift exchange. If anyone else wants to join in, match them up with me. If not, that is ok, I will wait till next year. Raeanne, welcome back. I'm glad that you had such a great trip. Things seem so unsettled in CA these days so I am glad that you are back safely. Dee, congrats on the 4#. That is a big loss. Enjoy your weekend. Have you set up your village yet? Milkdud, I saw part 2 of that Oprah show today. Was that the most unbelievable thing? Two warehouses full of stuff that was just piled in her house. It was amazing and certainly an incentive to declutter! I am curious to see what her house looks like in a year. Jen congratulations on the 9 pounds!! Lynn, good to see you. Are you still selling your house? Patti, how are you and Dave feeling? Are you traveling for Thanksgiving? Suzanne, the weather is supposed to be beautiful around here next week. Thanksgiving is supposed to be 60 degrees, which is great football weather. Hopefully you can get a ride in. BJ, you are among the missing too! John, I was glad to read your post last week. It sounds like things are going well for you. Nice car! Marci are the kids getting a little excited with the holidays approaching? When do you finish school? We get out Wednesday at noon. I'm glad you got to spend some time with DD. It was nice "chatting" with you all. Enjoy the weekend. Love, Besh...See Moresocks
