How high should stairwell pendant light hang? (pics)
Comments (6)birdgardner - You're too funny! Does that mean I should hire some local teenagers to jump up and down on my stairs to test if the height is good? Lol! avesmor - Thank so much for your thoughtful reply and beautiful photo! You are a wealth of knowledge! Sorry I don't have a better picture. Yes, it will be mounted to an 8' ceiling above the 2nd story floor pictured. And yes, we have a railing now (that photo is a few months old when the floors were getting worked on). Position wise, if you are standing on the higher angled landing, the light will be directly above where the missing railing should be (not centered directly over the staircase). I'll put an "X" there. Does that help? If it's still too unclear, I can try to get a better picture with the light that's there now. Centered at eye level as you stand. Hmmm - that sounds like a good height. Yes, I am worried about the cleaning/changing bulb factor. The electrician is going to have to construct a scaffold just to install it. You can't just plop a ladder against the wall to reach it. =/ I went with enclosed glass thinking it would get less dusty than the bell jar style pendant that I originally wanted that was open at the top (DH said NO WAY to that idea). I didn't even Think to do an open design that I could have attacked with a swiffer. Sigh. Hindsight is 20/20, right? Changing bulbs will likely be a nightmare. DH wants to go with an energy efficient Long lasting bulb so he has to change it as seldomly as possible. That's terrific that your DH can reach it with a hook. My DH is not that tall (could I hire yours when it's time to change a bulb? ha ha, just kidding). But maybe we could find a tall, long limbed friend or relative to help us!...See Moreanother opinion needed re pendant light
Comments (6)I think the light looks fine at the height it is, but it's the tile frame that's throwing it off. I think I'd be inclined to find some art that would fill that frame or a wall sculpture to float in it and the light would look more like it was placed to feature the art. Even a contrasting tile (or maybe a few relief cast tiles) would add some interest inside the frame. If you lower the light to the center of the frame, it's going to look like you intended the light to be a framed art piece. At first I thought this was a mirror but I guess it's a pass through. You can't see the whole pendant, but based on the cabinets, it looks to be about the same height. I like how they have the contrasting back splash and even though you can't tile it like this, maybe you could do something contrasting with tile in that lower area to make the higher frame seem deliberate. Like tiling a piece and have it installed in front of the existing tile, kind of like this, still with something interesting in the framed area? Comments (0)My kitchen island base is 8 feet long so I ordered 3 pendants that are 15.19 H x 10.5 W x 10.5 D. I then decided to extend the granite an additional 15 inches on one side of the island only to allow for wrap around seating. Total granite counter length will be 9"4 but base is still 8 feet. Do I hang the middle pendant over the center of the island or center of the granite? If I hang the middle pendant over center of granite, should I increase size of pendants? The next size up is 20 H x 13.75 W x 13.75 D. Base is installed but granite will not be for a few weeks. Cathedral ceiling if this makes any difference. Thank you....See MoreHow many and what size pendant lights should I use over my island?
Comments (3)Different goals come into play. Task lighting for when you work at the island counter requires 450+ lumens at the surface. The source should be placed so you don't shadow the work with your body. Ambient lighting is another objective. Recessed led cans on dimmers can do both. Pendants on dimmers or pendants and recessed lights can also do both. In addition, pendants can be decorative. Adequate task lighting is often missing in kitchen design....See Morebiondanonima (Zone 7a Hudson Valley)
