Herbs to help a perpetually itchy dog?
Comments (81)Hi, I am new to this particular forum but not to Gardenweb. One thing I noticed was that a lot of you talked about your dogs having hot spots - I wanted to make sure to suggest comfrey salve to you to heal those VERY quickly. I grow my own comfrey and make my own salve in quantity for my use and my 6 dogs, but you can also find it in your local natural foods store more than likely. Make sure if you put it on them you cover it so the dog can't lick it as comfrey can cause liver damage when taken internally. But the stuff is amazing. On the topic of feeding home-cooked, I have had great luck with the following when I have had a furkid with pancreatitis, or a puppy sick from tummy surgery, etc. In a large bowl I mix: 2 cups cooked brown rice 1 large jar baby food in a vegetable/meat combination any leftover plain cooked meat I have, chopped small (or baby food meat sticks if I don't have leftovers) 1 hard boiled egg, chopped 1 banana, mashed into mixture Mix and serve!...See MoreLarge Senior Dog Arthritis Supplements
Comments (8)You may also want to investigate dietary changes as certain foods may increase inflammation and aggravate arthritis. Many dogs get relief with grain free food without foods from the nightshade family, such as potatoes. There's also fish oil capsules (not cod liver) which contain omega 3 to reduce inflammation as well as herbs and vitamins (turmeric, vitamin E etc) Keep his weight in check and provide opportunities for moderate low impact exercise, especially swimming as it's non weight bearing. Some dogs respond to acupuncture and chiropractic treatment. Of course, any nonconventional choices should be discussed with your vet before proceeding. It's important to know the dosages and timing of these supplements especially with medication in the mix....See MoreDo you give your dog any joint supplements?
Comments (12)Recent research suggests that Glucosamine sulphate (versus Glucosamine hydrochloride) is more readily absorbed and may be the more effective form of this compound... unfortunately most canine forms are the hydrochloride, so you might want to research the product you are using and see if the sulphate one is available. Also fatty acid (Omega 3s) have been shown to be useful joint supplements (as well as good for other areas of the body), though at the doses already put in some joint diets probably insufficient to do much good (generally MUCH higher doses are needed)....See MoreCosmetic Fillers and Injectables Revisited
Comments (40)Ida - I can see that over time the cost of these little tweaks would really add up. Time-wise, monetarily, etc. I find it a pain just to get mani/pedis anymore. Bunny - did you ever consider a surgical option? Are you satisfied with the results you get from the Restylane in that area? One option for me is to try the filler, see what I think and then decide about surgery. But my gut is telling me I will be most satisfied with the surgical option (provided everything goes well!)....See Moreminjeeah
