Do you give your dog any joint supplements?

In addition to regular food, do you give your dog any joint supplements?

I was giving my dog a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement, but not sure if it really helps since it's not even been proven to work in humans. He's 6-1/2 yrs. old.

I gave fish oil for a while too, but got lazy about that one.

I'd also be interested to hear of any other supplements people use.

Yes, I did the same as the OP but not anymore. I gave the human joint supplement to the dog with the injured knee and I believed it helped. She did well for 3 years after her injury. It helps me too when I have a sore knee. I was also giving the fish oil regularly and it made their coats really soft. I stopped for convenience and their coats are still soft. I think their food has enough oil in it to soften their coats. (I switched foods a few years ago.)

I've heard of fish oil for skin and coat - essentially high fat. But not heard of for joints.

Way too funny! I found many, many things that apply to me lol! I especially like the one where you are driving down the road and almost crash into a tree because you are trying to see other peoples gardens! lolololol! That definitely describes me! I almost back ended someone while trying to turn my head 360 degrees to see someones garden! lol You know you are addicted to gardening when you sit outside at work during a break and think about what else needs to be done in the garden that day and week. And, yes my bathroom has lots of reading material of the gardening type! My hubby thinks I'm nuts!

We give Thor, our senior mastiff, Canine Cortaflex, a liquid supplement containing MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin. The maker offers a money-back guarantee if you are not pleased with the results. It is expensive (we buy 4 32-oz containers for $50 each; 32 oz. lasts about 3 months on a maintenance dosage, half that time on a loading dosage) but nothing else we tried worked as well. I also give Thor fish oil daily. Thor has partial ACL rupture in one knee and we did not want to do surgery. We had him on Rimadyl and were looking for supplements. We tried Cosequin and other joint care capsules, but could not reduce the Rimadyl dosage. Our area mastiff rescue coordinator recommended Cortaflex, which she gives to all her mastiffs. We've been able to decrease Thor's Rimadyl dosage significantly. Thor seems to be in no pain -- he now wants to run with the younger dogs and is out walking easily and happily around our large yard. He is comfortable getting up and lying down.

In addition to Glucosamine, or Adequan injection from the Vet, you can do the EPSOM SALT hot water soaks 2X a day for 15 min. That will help arthritis naturally. It won't hurt anything. This is what I did with my 13 yo, small dog, who has terrible arthtritis in her hind leg (knee and ankle) from an old injury: I took a small towel and immersed it in a bowl of very warmth water with Epsom salt. Wrapped her hind leg in it. I put a plastic bag around it, and wrapped all that in a large towel. Sat with her for 15 min watching TV. In 2 days she was walking normally. You just have to be careful so the water isn't burning them. It has to be as warm as they can stand it. Mix the Epsom salt well in the water. Dip the towel and apply. You can use it on any part of the body i.e. back, legs, neck... Just apply it to the affected area. It makes their old bones/joints feel good. It's also good for any swelling after an injury. Just ice for the first 48 hours. Use heat/soaking after 48hours. This method works wondefully on people who have a problem taking Anti-inflammatories.

On occasion it happens that my dogs get tricked. To me which would be harder on the dog, not getting a treat when I need to bring them in. OR me picking up a 80 lb plus dog or pulling and dragging him in I have done both. (this is not the norm occasionally my lab gets it in his head that he wants to stay out all night) Trust me the fake out is way better especially at midnight. Also works turning out the light and closing the door wait for 5 minuets then go get him. ( that trick I learned from my dad and me not getting home on time ) As for those who think resorting to a trick as poor training I say forget you. There is a lady at work likes to compare her oh so trained border collie which she got as a 3 month old pup to my big lab that I adopted when he was over a year old and had no socialization. When I share stories about my dohinkuses which are intended to be funny glimpses into the trials and tribulations of my dogs she always has a comment about how her dog always listens etc. In my own defense there have been many behaviors that I have resolved so I understand the need for training for safety of the dog and humans, and their of course needs to be rules but I would never ever ever want one of those overly trained dogs who have no free will cause their owners have replaced it with theirs. So yeah I have and will continue to trick my dogs if I need to if it means they get to be themselves. Oh yeah and did I mention the well trained border collie never gets walked cause she pulls on the lead.... hmmm :) Love my doggies

We used VetIQ Hip and Joint chews the last couple years we had our dog. It really made a difference. They are available at Sam's Club (not sure if anywhere else) and they were out of them for a few weeks and we could tell that he was moving much stiffer without them.

Edited to say that I just looked and Amazon carries them at a lower price.

Yup! And it makes a huge difference for both my 15 year old sharpei mix ( who still demands to take 2 walks a day) and my heeler mix ( who has hip dysplasia and a bad ankle). We do fish oil with both meals every day in addition to NatureVet's Joint support 3 ( great ingredients) and S.O.D. & Boswellia extra joint support.

I started giving our 10yo boys (Flat Coated Retriever mix and a Black Lab) this -

Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM Soft Chews for Dogs - about 6 months ago. Can tell a difference in both.

As per my vet, she said to give Cosequin DS because she trusts the company (Nutramax).
Said supplements aren't regulated in this country, U.S. so you never really know what you're getting.

destiny gets Dasequin joint supplement. i started olivia (9 years old) on adequan injections several months ago. it's helping her a LOT!! the initial "load up" period was bit pricey but she is now on just one injection a month and i give them myself so it's quite manageable.

Recent research suggests that Glucosamine sulphate (versus Glucosamine hydrochloride) is more readily absorbed and may be the more effective form of this compound... unfortunately most canine forms are the hydrochloride, so you might want to research the product you are using and see if the sulphate one is available.

Also fatty acid (Omega 3s) have been shown to be useful joint supplements (as well as good for other areas of the body), though at the doses already put in some joint diets probably insufficient to do much good (generally MUCH higher doses are needed).

I buy the generic of Move Free, they are small pills that I cut in half with a pill cutter...I put a half pill in half a piece of baloney...Caesar looks forward to his treat each evening.

My two current dogs are thankfully not arthritic, even the old timer. My previous dogs benefitted greatly from glucosamine/chondroitin, as I do myself. I gave them the same supplement I take myself which is the two ingredients in their pure form, not a "proprietary" mix which usually consists of an inert filler and a tiny amount of the active ingredients.

I did for awhile until I realized it was aggravating his already sensitive stomach. If you have an arthritic dog with stomach problems, watch for increased stomach symptoms if you choose to give supplements.

Gabapentin and Adequan are what gives him relief now.
