A Dozen Kordes Roses
Comments (43)I don't know if she's Winter hardy for you but Beverly is a beautiful Kordes ht, she smells wonderful, repeats frequently, and is fairly low thorned. I have almost all of the Fairytale roses (Cinderella, Lions, Brothers Grimm, Sisters, Pomponella, Golden, Floral, Kosmos, and Red Riding Hood)and they are disease resistant but they are not very fragrant(if at all)and they are VERY THORNY for the most part. They do not repeat as well as I would like considering they get big and thorny and have no fragrance. It could be that they're better in a colder climate. They have been a let-down as I planted them to replace Knock-outs but they get just as big, have no scent, are just as thorny (or thornier!), but do not repeat near as well. Of the Fairy tales I like Golden FT, Brothers Grimm FT, Pomponella and Red Riding Hood the best. I also have Sunny Sky, Winter Sun, South Africa, Buxom Beauty, Sweet Beauty, Grande Amour, Eliza, Poseidon, Solero and Zaide. Buxom Beauty is the most beautiful rose I own, but she's a little slow to repeat. They are all new last year, and this Summer has been Hell on them (100 degree plus temps for months and major drought). I am hoping the repeat will be better next year. All are very disease resistant so far and I very seldom spray (maybe once or twice in early Spring). I cram all of my roses into a too-small space and let them fight it out so I don't exactly have ideal growing conditions esp. in the hot, humid South. The new Austin rose, Lady of Shallott, is also very disease resistant, fairly low thorned and beautiful:)...See MoreYour favorite Kordes rose
Comments (32)Harry, that's beautiful. I think ADOLPH isn't suited for very many places, unfortunately. I'm currently nursing my 5th plant. My original one died after I planted it in the ground about 12yrs ago. I replaced it a yr or so later... in the ground. Died. Actually, I seem to recall it never actually broke dormancy. I didn't replace it. Then a few yrs later I got another one from Edmund's when they first got bought out. The roses I ordered with it all arrived very early in the season, and it, along with ALL AMERICAN MAGIC, did not break dormancy. So I contacted them in April and they shipped out 2 each of those two roses to replace them with... in MAY. Bareroots don't do well here in May! But both of the AAM's are alive now, however one of the ADOLPHs grew a bit and died. The remaining one nearly died a yr or so ago, but has tried really hard to come back. I'm keeping it in a pot to see if it will eventually get healthy enought to "try" putting it in the ground. If it weren't such a beautiful rose, I would give up on it. But I can tell you, if this one doesn't make it, I will not replace it again!...See MoreComparing health of newer and older rose varieties
Comments (6)Generally, yes, each decade sees the bar raised for health, vigor, quantity and quality of flowers, quality and quantity of foliage, etc. That doesn't take into consideration other variables such as suitability for where you are, your conditions, gardening style and personal taste. On the whole, though, newer roses are, in many ways, better garden plants with fewer health and vigor issues than the vast majority of those which preceded them. Of course, there are exceptions because occasionally something really superior is raised. Those often tend to be the ones which help lead to the improved roses of the next decade....See MoreConfessing Weakness for Kordes Roses
Comments (7)If you like shrub roses and antique roses you will love Beverly and Savannah. Beverly has a beautiful shrubby shape and gorgeous saucer like blooms that open large and wide and a fragrance to die for. It has more of an antique rose shape than a hybrid tea shape, even though many of the photos show it as looking very HT in shape, it really opens very wide and is very large and fluffy in form. Savannah is also antique looking in form, like an austin and its growth habit is also shrubby and not too much like a HT in its growth. I think you will be very pleased with them. If you like those, you should try Plum Perfect, Solero Vigorosa and Cream Veranda. All of those are wonderful wonderful roses. Earth Angel looks promising too. Another really lovely one is Wedding Bells. Its more HT in growth and bloom form, but without any of the fuss of growing a HT. Its quickly becoming one of my favorite roses and I rave about it to anyone who listens. I dont even really like the HT form, I prefer Old Fashioned blooms like Evelyn, but I just cant get over the health and sized of bloom and beauty of flower that Wedding Bells provides. Its like no other rose I've ever encountered....See MoreSara-Ann Z6B OK
