What trim shows both inside and out? Painted and Stained splits are done all the time. Unless I am missing something?

If you wish to emulate the historic Arts & Crafts style of California architects Greene & Greene, you would most likely use natural unpainted materials on the exterior and bring that idea inside as well since a principal theme was to bring the outdoors inside. The exterior would most likely be stained cedar shingles and stained cedar trim. The interior would most likely be clear or stained hardwood trim.

It would help if you told us what materials you intend to use for the interior and exterior walls and in what way you hoped to emulate the work of Greene & Greene.

The transition from exterior to interior materials usually occurs at the frame of doors and windows so it would help if you told us what kind of doors and windows you intend to use.

Thank you to this knowledgeable group! The windows will be douglas fir, the entrance door to be decided. The interior doors might be african mahogany (we'll have dogs who might scratch the doors up, so looking at harder wood). The interior walls are TBD, the exterior walls painted synthetic shingles since we don't want to deal with rotting. We got a quote of $175K-250K for exterior wood trims alone, including two decks, one smaller lookout deck - you step out and that's it and one bigger for lounging both in cedar wood. I am trying to figure out if we can keep this style and cut costs by doing painted wood outside. The inside of the house will have mostly stained wood, but will have updated look so it can go with any craftsman style. I looked at Mary Cole house (Greene and Greene), and it seems that the outside is painted, but now I think maybe my eyes fooled me.

Another burning question is whether we need to go back to the drawing board and do the other flavor of craftsman (it doesn't seem to be too much change, does it - maybe mostly changing the outdoor corbel and beam styles), removing the potentially expensive fake plaster+stone chimney, We have a lot of craftsman homes in our neighborhood that have painted exterior, this will be the only Greene & Greene. We are not married to the design, and might be ok about changing style if it is not too much of redesign work.

The Gamble House became home to David Gamble, his wife Mary, and their youngest son Clarence. (Their oldest son Cecil was already working for Procter & Gamble; their middle son Sidney had just started at Princeton University.) Mary's younger sister, Julia, also came to live with the family. By the summer of 1910, all the custom-designed furniture was in place.

David and Mary lived in the house until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Cecil Huggins Gamble and his wife Louise Gibbs Gamble began living in the house after Julia's death in 1944, and briefly considered selling it. They soon changed their minds, however, when prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior teak and mahogany woodwork white!

We love stained wood, and were thinking of doing mostly stained wood inside, or even outside if the cost is reasonable. But it turns out to be pretty silly cost wise, the house won't sell for what we spend on it. So, we asked our designer to go back to the drawing board, and reconsider the style. Maybe Greene & Greene is just not for us. I see a lot of beautiful painted craftsman in our neighborhood, with stained wood in common areas and painted wood in private areas. What would you call the other craftsman architecture styles? I am confused between Frank Lloyd Wright and Bungalow etc. Thank you!
