I took my 9 year old to the ER Monday with flu related symptoms, he tested positive. When the doctor looked in his ears she said he had a ball of wax that needed removed, he had no ear pain. The nurse came in to irrigate it. Have you ever had this done if so you know most often they use a large fat syringe, like for injections but big with a long thin hard plastic thingy on the end instead of a needle. Got Tim in position to flush the ear with sterile saline, I watched, but couldn't stop the nurse in time. She pushed the plastic end straight into his ear, Tim screamed bloody murder. I ask the nurse..why did you push that into his ear..she said I didn't..on the end of the plastic thingy was a ball of ear wax and there was blood, not a lot just a few drops on Tims hand when he pulled his hand away from his ear. I ask for a doctor. The doctor returned looked in the ear and said its fine no infection no damage but would prescribe a oral antibotic and antibotic drops anyway. Hmm..and all this time my Tim crying in pain.... the doctor looked at the syringe and dots of blood on the paper towel, put gloves on and removed these from the room instead of throwing them in the bio hazard trash in the room..Hmmm somethings wrong here. We left and headed to Childrens Hospital Pittsburgh where the ENT Doctor on call examined Tim and announced there's a hole straight thru the ear drum. his antibotic and drops were changed to different ones. I was told to take him into his ped in the morning who also confirmed the hole.

I'm furious. I did file a formal complaint but of course the nurse will be found not at fault. I'm really very angry about this. A nurse knows better than to push something into ears. than there's the doctor that had to see the hole but lied to me. I'm sick that this happened to my boy.
