It may be best for accessibility options to have a shower curtain. If your mother gets to the point where she needs assistance, shower doors will be a hindrance since the opening will never be more than about 34" Also consider grab bars: if you are redrywalling and such put wood blocking behind the walls so grab bars can be added. Consider doing a pedestal sink with separate storage. Or, I got a 30" Kraftmaid vanity will all plywood construction for $169 + $100 delivery. It was new surplus. The lighting may have to be brighter than you would use yourself. Consider overlighting the bath a bit and putting it on a dimmer. She may also like a heat lamp.

Real estate is so local - if you are doing this to help a future sale, definitely ask a good local realtor. In my area for resale I would put a (Kohler) frameless, recessed medicine cabinet centered above the sink. (I have finally rid my home of vanity-width mirrors - I agree with PP about watching yourself 'go,' and at least mine seemed dated (but probably b/c the rest of our baths were dated. I see no benefit to a mirror and then cabinet to the right: too cluttered for me (and why clean all that mirror?); and to get anything out of the medicine cabinet you have to reach over the toilet). For resale I'd definitely go simple, uncluttered and white for everything difficult to change. Unless the shower is about 5.5' long or more, I'd omit the built in seat and grab bar for resale unless the seat is inexpensive. (I am personally installing grab bars b/c I want them.) Get a cute colorful lightweight shower stool (amazon has a great one - we got green) for about $20 and remove it for open houses - it will make the shower look bigger. OH - and 1 item that doesn't cost more and is so great for you (and at least some buyers who know of it): if you are going to use glass on the shower stall, have the plumber put the on/off handle close to the entrance so you don't get wet when you turn it on. Then put the diverter (fixed/handheld transfer valve) under the shower heads. I always think its a miss when I go to a flip/spec house and they put the controls under the shower heads. And do 2 recessed shower niches on the shower walls so the bottles etc. are hidden from the view of the room (1 on wall w/toilet, one to left of shower heads). Will look less cluttered in a small bathroom. (FYI This will take planning at framing and rough plumbing stage. Alot of planning - like have your Ready-Niches on site before then. Ask me how I know...) But, again, real estate is so local so what I say could mean 0 to your area.

Thanks all. Yes, Karen, that's the light fixture. It's 16" x 6" but I couldn't seem to downsize it to attach. Do you just hate the fixture or the whole idea of chrome with this combination? The cabinet pulls, knobs, and faucet are fairly unobtrusive but still chrome. My3dogs: Here's the cabinet style but painted not stained like this. 60" double vanity, doors on the sides with three drawers in the middle. Oval sinks in white with 2 frame less 24x36 rectangular mirrors over each. I couldn't find a picture that matched. Ck, it's the Kelvingrove Cambria and I haven't seen it used very much although I think it's pretty too. What do you think of this light fixture instead? Still chrome but more industrial style with smoked glass. More in line with the countertop and cabinets? I don't really like Edison bulbs for the bath but maybe with another bulb? Or am I still off base?

If you think your old shower is NOT leaking, it probably is. You just can't see it. Mold on the walls. Masks on! Good thing we are removing the paneling/drywall. Of course, there HAD to be another layer of paneled drywall! No, there couldn't possibly be only one layer of this crap! We will gain an inch in dimensions with it gone. That brown paneled wall is a hall closet that is 39" and it may or may not be reduced to 24" deep. Depends on whether we put a shower or a tub in the bath. With a tub, we will need to move the wall. Note to the ladies: If your new cabinets are ready to be installed by the cabinet maker, and if you have been waiting on your significant other to demo for over a month, and he still hasn't done it, just start doing it yourself! (I am in my sixties.) Then, when you can't get a screw out, or you can't get the box blade knife to work right so you can remove a million pounds of silicone caulk, he will jump into the project because you are obviously "not doing it right" or "can't find a bit that goes with that screw", etc, etc, etc, (name your own problem.) I took a break, and he began where I left off. He could not help himself. Works every time! It is well worth the ten band-aids I now have on seven of my fingers! Tomorrow, we will remove the toilet, an L shaped vanity countertop and cabinet, towel cabinet, old lighting, wall mirrors, corner mirrored cabinets, and an oak shelf that the lights are attached to. That shelf is nothing but a dust catcher! Then, time to do drywall. While tearing out, we found that there used to be a window in the bathroom. I don't know why the previous owners removed it. So, I have a question. When is the right time to refinish the black, marble floor tiles? After drywall, texture and paint? Or after cabinets are in place? Thanks.
