I spent many years working as a registered nurse. Most of the time those things do not bother me.

Also, I didn't like dissecting the frog in biology class. Don't like the smell of formaldehyde.

The sight of blood and guts does not really bother me. Neither does poop. I don't know what it is about vomit that makes me vomit.

I will admit to getting ill one time when I was having blood taken. But it wasn't the sight of the blood,it was the nurse twisting and turning the needle around in my arm that did it. That never happened before,and hasn't since. Its incredibly easy to hit a vein in both my arms. Some people should not take blood if they can't find a vein without digging around like a doofus.

When I was at the ER the last time they put an IV in me. Every time I moved my arm I felt the needle moving and digging.

I gag when I hear or see humans vomit. I've gotten used to the cats doing it. I can't watch them piercing my skin when they're withdrawing blood - but once the needle is in, I can watch, no problem.

Oh, I yawn when anything yawns, even fish. In fact, I just yawned a couple times just writing about it.

Dad would turn pale and get rather useless when either of us kids came home bleeding from minor injuries from whatever us kids would get into.

When my children were little I could handle anything that happened. Now that I am old? Very sensitive to any bad odors.

My children (grown up now) or my dogs, I can (could) handle "whatever." The heave reflex kicks in if "it" belongs to anyone else.

I've never had to witness serious blood and gore, so not sure. In general blood doesn't bother me. Nor poop. The smell of vomit will make me heave a little, so I know to hold my breath. With no kids, I've only ever had to deal with the dog variety. Once DH hurt himself and bled profusely, but it didn't bother me.

Needles, on the other hand, make me cringe. Can't. Look. I can tolerate the stick as long as I don't have to watch. Even hearing someone talking about needles makes my insides cringe.

The sight of blood, poop, or animal vomit doesn't bother me, but a human throwing up I can't take and will join them. I guess I am lucky that I never had any children.

Funny thing-- after working for a summer as a dental chairside assistant for my dad, I concluded that I would not follow in his footsteps because I couldn't take other people's mouths. I now work in critical care in a hospital dealing with poo, vomit, drool, mucus, any fluid you can think of and rotting flesh without problem -- go figure!

Having raised three children, I have learned to tolerate almost anything without ill effects. Though I get irked rather quickly when a medical professional cannot find a vein.

When I was a kid I was more sensitive to those things. Now after taking of dogs, a son, and a husband (who has had some accidents with tools), those things don't bother me that much. It is especially true with having a kid. I have had everything from both ends on my clothes and even my hair.

I am more averse to certain sounds and smells than sights. Blood and gore does not bother me (even in real life) but every since I was pregnant, blood and gore with the screaming does me in. If we mute the movie I am fine, but the screaming nauseates me. I found out while doing some research during surgeries that the sight of the surgical site and organs is fine, but some of the sounds and smells gross me out.

Raw mushrooms taste like human innards smell during surgery. Can't eat them because of that - neither raw mushrooms, nor human innards ;) LOLOLOLOL! (Sorry, had to do it).

And I don't like the sight or feel of slimey things.

I am the designated pet barf cleaner-upper at our house, husband cannot handle it. I don't love it, but I can deal with it. Though I was pushed to my limits with the copious amounts (and smell) our 130 pound lab would produce. I learned covering it with lots of baking soda to mask the stench and then using a plastic bag covered broom and picker-upper made cleanup a lot easier.

On a different note, why is there at least one graphic vomiting scene in just about every movie or TV show lately? Not sure what the purpose is, unless they are trying to help people reduce TV time snacking. :)

In general, I can handle effluvia, human or animal. I'm much more sensitive to sounds than to smells and sights.

I can handle animal stuff much better than human. Anything animal is OK even the things that give me the heebie jeebies in people. Dog vomits, I just wait for them to be done. Horse snorts mucus in my face or hair? I wipe it off away with my hand and carry on. LOL Weird how animal stuff is somehow "cleaner".

Not good with human poop or vomit unless my kids (when they were children) or my grand kids.

Blood and guts I am fine with. I go into help mode. I also love watching surgeries etc. I dislike seeing anyone in pain. That would be hard for me to overcome if I was in medicine.

Now seeing drool, snot or phlegm brings up my retch factor. I don't even like to see the words.

Most things do not bother me, but for me, the worst is picking maggots out of wounds on animals. I had someone try to tell me that maggots don't do any damage to living tissue....and they are actually good because they clean up "debris" from wounds. I beg to differ. I can tell she has never had to do it. There are all kinds of maggots....just as there are all kinds of flies and they most definitely will eat into living tissue, as well as dead tissue....and eyes and rectums and ears. Not only do they look gross, they have a particular smell that makes me gag. But if I have to do it, I do. I have found several ways to help get them out. It is awful......believe me.

Petra, actually I think they should have amputated it. It's been a year and it's still a mess. Surgery after surgery to fill in the area and skin graft & who knows what else.

The doctors keep saying yes, within another year or 2. It will never operate like normal but better than a prosthesis.

He really doesn't want to loose it, so I understand. But so much pain.

Yes, that is a lot to have to suffer through. Fingers crossed things will turn out even better than expected.

That is what the top of my DH's foot looked like when he got a post operative infection. It's amazing how they can save limbs these days. They used pig skin as a graft to regrow new flesh on his foot given the area is so thin.

The smell of rotten, slimy, food will get me. Can handle most other things. The maggots are really bad I agree. I feel so bad for those animals

He's lucky, and that must be a LOT of pain. How does he get around, as I assume he cannot walk without assistance? I wish him much luck in recovery!

I'm a retired research biologist, and have seen a lot of things. But the worst was going into the animal room one Monday morning, and seeing that one mouse had done the Jeffrey Dahlmer on his nine cagemates over the weekend. He was jumping up and down against the edge of his bloodstained cage, apparently hoping to take me on, too.

PS: little known factoid: rodents can't vomit.

I didn't know that about rodents.

Artemis, he uses crutches, walker or wheelchair depending on where he is & where he needs to go.

He's 30 and very lucky that he's strong enough to endure all these surgeries even though he's had numerous infections.

He also has a strong will & mind for this & remains positive, which inspires me.

I just got home from seeing my Rheumatologist. She wanted to run yet more extensive panels for more possible conditions she thinks I may have. I am testing positive now for some that were questionable before. This entailed going to the lab and having another 10 vials of blood drawn. Last week they took 3. Once she ordered so many it was 15 vials at once. The poor guy drawing the blood kept stopping to ask me if I was OK. I was fine it doesn't bother me at all. I told him I am fine but I may be light headed from all this blood loss lol. I have no problem with participating in surgery, blood drawing, births, you get used to it pretty quickly in training. I didn't like the smell of formaldehyde at all and when working on the cadavers for long periods of time we reaked of it, eyes would be red and swollen from it. The actual work didn't bother me. In pre med human anatomy lab we worked on cats. Each group of 3 had a cat to disect. We were allowed to take it to one person's house and work as a team. I lived near the university in a trailer and one of my group lived right across from me so we would meet at my house. The cat was kept in my fridge. I rarely had food lol. My parents showed up one day and my mom opened the fridge to see if I had any food, saw the cat, passed out cold. They learned that it was best not to do anything like that lol. She was fine just scared me to death.

Scott, how tragic for your friend to have to deal with this issue. I do hope his leg heals as far as possible and he can resume a normal or near normal life again.

I'm not usually too bad with blood, vomit or feces. I mean I'm disgusted but I can do what need to be done. What does me in is seeing someone in pain. I fainted when visiting a friend in the hospital once, because he was in so much pain.

His side got ripped open too.

When I worked years ago whenever a kid puked in the store and I was working they would call me to clean it up. After 4 kids I was impervious to it. Just don't make me watch one of my kids get an IV put in. I'd be flat on the floor.

When I get an IV, it's all I can do to just lay there!

OK, I might like to refine my answer. Those pictures only bother me a little. I'm not sure I could handle seeing that in person. I know I've never seen anything that gory in real life. Your friend must have some tremendous inner strength to deal with that.

I work in an ER so nothing bothers me anymore. Except the one time a patient came in with maggots coming out of a wound. After I started to irrigate the wound and they came out I almost lost it. Thank God the doctor was all excited to go in because I couldn't handle it!

Not a lot bothers me. I was raised on a livestock farm and did most of the shots and castrated lambs, farrowed out sows and cut a dead calf out of the cow. Went out on farm calls with my vet.

That is a lot of recovery that guy has to go through. I hope he retains use of his leg. Good luck to him.

Yes, my friend is amazing. However this accident actually made him a different person. He's more kind & caring. I think the accident changed his life. He used to be very arrogant & self centered. But he was cool to me & made me laugh.

Nobody has asked yet, but he was in a 4 wheeler accident. He & his brothers took their 4 wheelers out in the woods behind his house. They were going too fast & wreckless & he hit a tree going too fast.

Kind of like this but he wasn't wearing safety gear.

So very sad to happen to a young man. His life is definitely forever changed and I am sure he is too. I wish him well.

A student vomited on the back of my head a while back. He came to my desk to tell me he didn't feel good & I bent over to tie his shoe (he struggles with such) & yup, I vomited right on top of his...what a mess we had for the janitor!

Sometimes, when people are too "reckless" (especially not wearing the safety gear that they know to be important) ...

... they end up ... well, probably not really "end up", but rather ... their next step is to be NOT "wreckless"!

Having had heavy choring responsibilities on Dad's farm from age 10, when the hired hands went off to war and we had a substantial number of cows, horses, pigs and chickens ... not only the sight of poo, but getting it on hands, face and most everywhere doesn't bother me.

Up-chuck, either - be it animal or human: just needs cleaning up.

Not troubled by the smell, either.

Watching needles going into my arm (hard to get a view if it's the bum) doesn't bother me: they haven't been able to get anything out of my left arm for years. Relating to the blood clots a few years ago and resulting prescription of warfarin, and the cancer, there's been a number of such occasion in recent years.
