Need help identifying trees

We would like to prune back some overhanging trees which come into our garden, but due to them being in a conservation area, we need to identify them for the council application. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the first and third sure look like the invasive English ivy in mature, fruiting form (assuming this is evergreen). It's a climber and not a tree.

Can you tell us where this is? (location)

Thanks. We did have issues of ivy coming from another garden so that would explain it. The closest other potential I could find online was a Viburnum Tinus, but ivy would make sense. Hopefully someone can help with the other pictures :-)

Thanks kindly everyone and yes Ken i wasn't sure if it was too intense to list them all under one post. Next time ill do each one singularly under the right category. Im going to educate myself on needlecast and perhaps even have someone come look at them. Id be hesitant to start using fungicides without being sure of what I'm doing or its knock on effects. "i agree the pine.. #8 ... is on its last legs ... it can be cut to the ground.. and something new planted a few feet over.. it will not resprout from the trunk ... IMHO ... do not give some dude repeated boat payments.. because he claims he has the drug to fix it ..." Sage advice thank you. I would never have been able to assess it this way.

i see why they are there .. being invasive.. i would get rid of them ... but i would make it a multi year project ... starting at one end [or both ends] .. and planting something different ... while leaving the rest... to maintain some semblance of a screen ... and then.. each year.. removing another ... or just do it all at once.. and be done with it ... ken

Dwarf cultivars of both Italian and Leyland cypresses are on the general market at this time. However I have seen problems with small dead shoot tips throughout the specimen on stock of the former here and I am not sure plants of the latter I have seen in person looked like they were capable of producing successful long term landscape features that were not going to do things like fall open or brown out.

I guessed you were in the UK from your use of the word 'garden' ;-)

1 & 3 are the arborescent (flowering) stage of Hedera helix, common ivy. You do not need to make an application to remove this. It is not a tree. And nor is invasive here. It is a valuable native species but a bit of a pain in a garden.

2 & 4 show a Privet hedge. Again no permission is required as it is not a tree.

None of the pictures show Viburnum tinus and even if they did that is not a tree either.

All you are doing is cutting back overgrown hedges and you do not need to get permission for that. I also live in a conservation area so I do understand the situation.

However, the ivy appears to be partially growing up a tree next door so when you cut it back ensure you are only cutting the ivy and not the tree. If you want to remove branches of the tree get some closer pics and we'll tell you what it is.

Thank you very much for your help - I'll get back onto the council saying that we shouldn't need permission to do this.

Do that if you wish but I wouldn't bother. Basically you are just cutting the hedge on your side. The council shouldn't have anything to do with it. If the hedge is in a garden and has been maintained as a hedge you do not need permission. If the hedge has not been maintained for years and has formed a row of trees you might need permission. Have you already put in the application?

In these views the Ivy looks to have the large (7.5-15-cm-wide), usually 5-lobed leaves of the common version(s) of Irish Ivy (Hedera hibernica) and the Ligustrum looks to be L. ovalifolium.

I'm pretty sure that is just bog standard H helix Embo. It has the whitish veins and the species is absolutely ubiquitous, especially as a bird sown infiltrator of hedges.

On the other hand the Irish Ivy infestation right outside my office window looks just like it. Including having leaves with pale veins. This plant is very familiar to me anyway as it is "Seattle's worst weed" (A. L. Jacobson) and I have spent hours cutting and pulling it off of trees as an approved volunteer at a local city park.

What about the small leaves climbing the fence at the bottom of the second picture? It looks like H helix to me. It is very variable and appears in all sorts of interesting shapes and sizes. Anyway - it matters not to the OP since it is destined for destruction whatever it is.

Yes, I've already put in the application but it's still in the awaiting approval stage due to not identifying the trees. I'll just go back to them saying that I believe I don't need permission as they're not trees. Just wanted to cover myself as they're coming over the fence from a conservation area.
