Don't feel lonely when it comes to the wind. Oklahoma is living up to it's reputation of the winds "sweeping 'cross the plains". I was starting to prune my roses Saturday when the temperature suddenly dropped and the winds came up blowing through me like water through a sieve. I like never to have gotten warmed up again. Your single digit temperatures are scary. I need temperatures to stay above the hard freeze number (29) or it will play havoc with my plants. Daylilies for instance have grown out to the 50% mark now and it won't be long before they are fully leafed out.........Maryl

Here in S.W. Ontario we had double digit weather for 2 weeks then went into a deep freeze .........it was - 8 celcius overnight and now at 5:30 p.m. it is 10 degrees celcius out there . Weather guesserators said It was supposed to rain all day ........of course it didn't .....not a drop so I was out there cleaning out more gardens . All told we have maybe had 6 inches of snow this entire winter......but lots and lots of rain. This is a bad time in the gardens as there is no frost deep down in the ground so when we get the bitter polar vortex winds the top of the ground freezes then it thaws and pulls the daylilies out of the ground and then freezes again etc. I spent most of my time shoving daylilies back in the ground this afternoon. This happens every year. Sigh!

Pretty warm here in southern New Mexico, but very windy and no rain. All the trees are budding, the daylilies are up and growing well, and the lawn is just starting to turn green. Today was a high of 80 and the rest of the week will be in the mid-70's. Did I mention windy? Some shingles off my eaves blew off last week in the extreme wind (80 miles an hour) and I was relieved none of my plants were damaged!

The weather here is similar to Signets experience. The daylilies are doing fine, none are popping out of the ground. I did loose a few large sedum of all things, they did pop out of the ground. That makes room for more daylilies!

We've had crazy weather here too. It's been warm all week, but really windy and rainy and stormy. Bob needs to spray the fruit trees, but can't find a time when it's not too windy. The daylilies, except for the most dormant ones, are up quite a bit. Some show frost damage from a week and half ago. Now it supposed to turn cold again and get down into the teens. I knew it would frost soon since there are magnolia trees in bloom in town and often as not they get frosted, especially the star magnolias. I haven't looked at the lilacs, but I'm afraid their buds will get frosted too.

As much as I long for winter to be over, I just wish spring would wait until spring to come.

Crazy weather. Nights we get light freezes, then 60 and above in daytime. Azaleas and bridal wreath spirea bloomed out now, daylilies are all fully except Neon Rainbow and White Eyes, Pink Dragon, ( they are always slower to develop, but they are up and growing) and I expect the bloom spikes to begin in the next couple of weeks.

Unfortunately I lost Cat Ballou. It is sickening, and I don't know why, but there was a big nest of ants around it and I suspect they had a part in the demise.

I've have gotten a good bit of weeding and cleaning done, but it is supposed to storm today and has already started raining.

I live in SW Michigan and I haven't noticed any real damage or problems even with the last month of weather oddities. Today we have gusts of up to 60mph. My yard is the farthest east and north of the neighborhood and there are not many houses that have fences so I always get all of the neighborhood debris: I have had buckets, large bouncy balls, and especially loose trash like papers, cardboard pizza boxes. Last month I finally did something that I think might be a good idea, we'll see. I put a pallet compost set up at the farthest corner of my yard: that is where all of the stuff accumulates anyway so maybe I will at least be able to turn lemons into lemonade.

JWPookie , seems we are getting the same winds as you . I am north and east of you in Canada and the winds are just howling out there this morning . We have no snow so I was hoping to be able to work in the gardens today as it is lovely and sunny .......but nope, I tried and the winds are just too bitter . It seems the winds never stop these days .......

High winds here today too and suppose to last through till morning. Sounds like a train is coming. We live in a very open area so no barriers to block the winds.

Temps will drop dramatically again and snow is coming back again. Single digit over night temps for the weekend. :(

We had such a warm winter off and on, more warm than cold. Today is supposed to be near 70. But......winter returns for spring. The 8-day forecast includes cold and some snow.

yesterday was a real treat ! The winds were horrendous upwards of 60 mile an hour gusts . Mid afternoon, I was adding water to grain for my chickens and pigs and while doing that , was looking out the kitchen window and watched as my husbands Portable Garage got picked up about 30 feet in the air and fly about 200 feet towards the road . I freaked out and grabbed my coat and flew out the door to try to stop the garage from taking out a car as it was headed for the road . It sort of got wrapped around an old plum tree but the winds werent going to leave it there so I spent 3/4 of an hour just trying to hold it in place. I was lifted off the ground 3 times while the winds were gusting which was a bit terrifying. During a lull in the wind, I ran back across the yard to find some ropes to tie the frame to the tree and it came to me that I was filling a bucket of grain with water at the start and I couldnt remember if I had turned off the water so stopped at the door and peeked into the kitchen. Guess who's day just got worse because as luck would have it I had not shut the water off properly. ! My kitchen floor was flooded . I popped into the house just long enough to turn the water off and headed back to the garage and got the frame of the thing tied to the tree in about 6 or 7 places. What a treat ! Once I got the garage frame tied to the tree I had to head back to the house to deal with the water in the Kitchen. To top it all off the bucket when filled had overflowed and grain had of course dropped into the sink when the water was running and so The kitchen sink was plugged. My husband had to spend about 2.5 hours opening it up and clearing the drain;. Boy, you know you are having a bad day when....................

Signet: goodness, that is quite a day. Hopefully all is back to normal. I did hear this morning we are in for another round of winds here. Rochester NY which is north of us has many areas still without power.

Signet....oh poor you! What a terrible day you had. My husband has 2 of those portable garages and we have our share of stories regarding them.....we 'lost' our 3rd one when we forgot to get the foot of snow off it last storm and it collapsed. The two we have left are tied down with stakes and nearby trees because we had an episode of them lifting up for takeoff and I can relate to chasing them down....lol. Yesterday we had 59 mile per hour gusts but they both stayed put this time.

So sorry you had to go through all that and hope you are having a GREAT day today!

Well, we have had a real Kansas dirt storm, just like the dirty 30's. Most of you don't remember those, but I'm old enough to remember it well. We have had no measurable precipitation since July, so the topsoil is blowing away in my yard. Wild howling winds strong enough to blow me over on the way to the trash can. Kansas and Oklahoma are having terrible wildfires, people and cattle being burned, I have lost track of how many houses burned, but dead cattle over a thousand. We have chinook helicopters dropping water on the fires, but there is no stopping it when the wind blows. I live in Dodge City and people have lost houses on the outskirts of town, too close for comfort.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts . I survived the ordeal thankfully but unfortunately the garage did not . It is much the worse for wear .

Much more serious is the situation flowergirl70ks has written about . How horrible ! Makes my situation seem miniscule . I hope things calm down immediately and there is no further losses but how horrible for those who are already affected ! My thoughts and prayers go out to them .

Flowergirl: I know how much this drought has affected all of us. Today, thank goodness we are getting some rain to tamp all the dust/fires down, but Thursday was almost apocalyptic. The smoke from all the surrounding fires was palpable and the setting sun was blood red. I've never seen a sun so red before.. I thought it was the second coming or something...... I had hoped we were over the worst of the drought last year, but as with all of mother nature, she will remind us who really is in charge. Tonight it will drop down into the high 20's - a hard freeze - after a high Thursday of 84. Not good at all.........Maryl

We are now on a winter storm watch for Tuesday but no idea just how much we may or may not get. The lake effect snow and wind with temps dropping into the teens/single digits continues here. Definitely Mother Nature is in charge and battling Old Man Winter.

I'm late here, sorry to hear about more bad stuff! Hopefully the tides will turn soon. The temp over night has been in the twenties, had 60 mph winds here also. Had pictures forwarded from our friends that live south of Charlotte, SC. They have more snow now than we've had all winter here west of Chicago. Maybe April will be better!

I talked to someone who lives west of Albany today and they had 20 inches of snow with more coming down. Another friend who lives up that way got tired of all the power outages they usually get in winter and put in a generator. Certainly would make me feel more secure........... Unbelievable how much snow we have gotten in a 24 hour period and it is still snowing this morning but not as heavily has yesterday but the high winds have continued. We will not be able to dig out till perhaps tomorrow. We kept wondering when we would get the "big one". No longer wondering, lol. So far, we have not lost power....thankfully. Windchill at zero. Hope my fellow northern dwellers are safe.

I am so sorry so many of you are having such weather problems. Flowergirl and Maryl, so awful. wWe had the fired like that back in the fall, but not the winds. So hoping you will soon get rain. Julie, I cannot imagin that kind of snow. Hope the power stays with you.

Great gusts of winds carrying snow here . Worst day we have had all winter. Streamers off the lakes are the culprit as the lakes never really froze solid this winter . At times today we are not able to see our neighbour's house across the road. It's ridiculous the sun is shining like crazy , wind is blowing ,and it's snowing at the same time .( how does that work?)

Our power was just restored after 23 hours. The house was COLD....39 degrees INSIDE temperature. I wore my long johns under my pajamas and many blankets piled high and still shivered all night. We got 20 inches of snow and wind so fierce that limbs were snapping off trees and an entire tree landed on the power lines down the road and started a huge fire....hence why we had no power. Cable and internet was out even longer. I am just now getting online and DH is still snowblowing and digging out. We have a generator but because we don't have a garage it is kept on our porch (can't run them indoors) and it wouldn't start. I am taking a nice hot bubble bath tonight!

celeste: Sorry to hear about the power outage. I know the feeling of not having power from other storms we've had but luckily we didn't have an issue this time.

Hoping to dig out today. Snow has stopped, winds are light but not as strong as the last couple of days. Sun is out and hopefully the temps pump up.

That's no fun Celeste! Doesnt it always go that way though?Y ou have the equipment for emergencies but it doesnt work when you need it . So frustrating! If I were you I wouldn't wait till tonight for that hot bubble bath.....I go have one now and another tonight. Glad things are getting back to normal for you
