Fire in kitchen; restoration not going well - long

We were moving from one home to another and the DH set a cardboard box on the gas stove. While no one was there, a cat turned the burner on and set the box ablaze. By the grace of all things Serendipitous, DH returned to the house on Christmas Eve to be greeted by alarms going off and a house full of black soot and smoke. He got the burner turned off, the fire out and called insurance. And the fun began....

Not only do I think the settlement was insufficient, it took me forever to get a list of all things Service Master took from my kitchen. And 2 and 1/2 months to get photos so I could see what they left off. They stripped my kitchen down to studs and still have not begun to rebuild. Instead, they're repainting the entire house and have used a paint that was incorrectly mixed and is the wrong color!!

I am so frustrated, I could scream. I keep getting assurances that they "will take care" of me, but I'm not feeling the love. Please share any advice you have based on a similar experience. Should I forget talking to these hired hands and go straight to my agent? How did you manage?

I had a total loss house fire due to somewhat similar circumstances. Entire house torn down to studs - much of it because of smoke damage.

The insurance adjustor, restoration people, and my agent were not helpful (an understatement). Insurance companies are in business to make money.

Ended up needing to hire an attorney, wish I had done so much sooner.

No fire but a burst pipe in a 2nd floor bath and us out of town. My DD discovered it when she came by to check on the house on Super Bowl Sunday. Boy, did she have a treat trying to find anyone to come out. It did extensive damage, as it went through the hardwood floor to the basement where the pop and stick tiles installed by the previous owner, popped up and ended up blocking the floor drain.

I can't remember the company we used but they broke things, lost things, never did finish repairs and generally were horrible. My insurance company was not horrible, but also not very helpful. The GC we hired turned out to be a total flake - high recommendations from people in my neighborhood, who later told me that they had had "a few problems with her" but since they were all members of the country club they didn't feel "right" talking poorly about her.

In the end, 90% was done correctly and the last 10%...well, they just wore us down and by then (happened in late Jan and we were now in late July!), we just wanted them out of the house.

I feel your pain... Hope the cat is okay.

Hi everyone! I am so happy that you all appreciate my garden shots because I do knock myself out every summer even though not too many people see them...its fun to share them with my friends here! Since the lilies seem to be a hit, I will have to do another post sometime of all the other lilies that I have...that will be a LONG post too, since I am a lily fanatic (and a rose nut!). I have SO many lilies! These are just the ones in the red/yellow/orange color range...I have even more that are pastels. They do pair so well with roses, and I am enjoying the flush of lilies that fill in the gap when the roses aren't as prolific. No, we don't have any bunny problems since my cats scare all little creatures away! I do have to contend with nasty lily beetles...vile red creatures, and Japanese beetles, yuk. No, Tiffany does not garden nor does my 22 yr. old son or 20 yr. old daughter...I admit that I begged her to come outside so I could snap the picture! I am working on my son's fiance who is showing an interest in flowers, so there is hope! I am glad you liked the picture of Grace because my other daughter's name is Grace so its a favorite...(as well as my Tiffany rose, of course!) Celeste

Thanks for making me feel more confident about my choices. Yes, everyone was okay. They had to take the house back down to the studs. I didn't cry after the fire, just when I went in after it was back down to the frame. It was unbelievable that I was back down to the frame in less than two years, broke my heart. But none of that really mattered because my husband,kids and pets were safe. Living Room after fire Ironic because no one was allowed to sit on my light couch because I didn't want it to get dirty. LOL! Living room after demolition I was thinking of doing alot of black accessories. Mixing in some white as well. My kitchen is accented with red and black. The lights will be very similar to the can lights in the original photo. They have just not been put in yet. I do have that crazy burnt orange bedroom and office and my DD's room is apple green so I do have some other colors in the house I guess. The two main bathrooms still have white walls, only the master bathroom is painted. I like having those two rooms white, in case I need a "break" from all the paint. Public Service Announcement-please be sure to take lots of photographs of each room in your homes. I had forgotten so many of the details of my home and there are alot of things that go into a home that you don't think about when you buy a model home because the builder puts alot of those things in. Also, keep a list of manufacturers and model numbers. Hopefully, you'll never need these things. I love the backsplash, but was hoping I could find something very similar with some black tiles mixed in, but these were very inexpensive, and I'm afraid to look for more because I may end of paying alot.

Sue, it has a heat pump, but also radiant heat in the ceiling, which I love. The realtor didn't know if it still worked or not, though. She's going to find out. I did have my house inspected but I don't think it did me a lot of good. There were still problems with it after I moved in that he never mentioned in his report. I have looked at a lot of houses in town, though, none recently other than this one. There aren't alot of big houses in the area I want to move. If there are, they're a story and a half which I don't want, even though they are super cute. At my age and looking forward, I don't want anything with stairs. The house is nice, but I have some problems with it. The closets all are loose on the bottom, not attached to floor tracking. Thought that was kinda weird. There are lots of closets, though, and I love that. The floor slopes in a few rooms, like the master bathroom, kitchen and garage. They redid the flooring in the kitchen and dining area but didn't cut the tile right, or put edging or anything around the edges so there are big ugly gaps near the edge where the flooring and cabinets/walls should meet. It's an old house, built before 1978 so I didn't think it was going to be perfect. I do love the separate rooms, living room, den, dining room, laundry room, and the bedrooms are much bigger than mine. I'd only have to run one line of fencing to keep the dogs in the backyard. There is a separate area completely fenced off but I would use that area for a garden. The hardwood floor is beautiful. It also has new windows. I also love the built in desk in the den, built in shelves in that same room around the fireplace. I think I'm going to call about getting pre-approved and then maybe go back and look at it again before I have an inspection done or go any further.

I love your windows! I have windows up high as well, and I love them. I can look up and see sky, clouds and the treetops. Really beats looking at the huge dirtpile in the back yard left from digging the addition. (Hopefully it will be gone soon, but till then....) Enjoy the remodel! Cj

Our kitchen took 2.5 years to finish after a dishwasher flood. Many arguments, crying and kicking peopke out of the house.

My neighbors had similar problems after their fire. Insurance unhelpful, and the plumber they hired was having family problems. When it became clear he wasn't going to be able to actually do the work they'd hired him for, they contacted the company from whom the plumber had ordered the fixtures, hoping, at least to get those delivered. It turned out he'd never ordered any fixtures, he'd used their deposit to pay for something else. He was a member of their church, and they felt that suing him would just be piling on his problems. And, well, you can't get money from someone who doesn't have any.
