Mac Mouse Problem

Mouse isn't tracking properly. It's rechargeable, so not batteries. I thought my mouse pad was worn out (it's about 15 years old), so bought a new one. Still having problems - if I turn it over to the rough side the mouse works properly. On the smooth side it doesn't seem to "roll". It's wireless. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? Thanks!

Sounds like the friction on the rough side is making it "roll" better, that could indicate the mouse itself has an issue. Lots of users use the rough side.

How old is the mouse? Possibility that the batteries have gotten to the point that they won't hold a good charge.

Are you using your mouse on a shiny surface? Have encountered completely erratic behavior for some mice that way. Put a piece of paper underneath and see if it stabilizes. Are the drivers completely up to date? Have you tried another port if it's usb? Finally, is it connected usb and ps/2? Try only usb. Those are some of the issues I encounter regularly with wireless.

You may just have a corrupted driver or a mouse going bad. Delete the driver and reboot the computer. XP should find the right driver and reinstall it automatically. You could also try a different mouse and see if it has problems or not. I doubt this problem is a symptom of a failing computer, especially since the mousepad continues to work, but this should be a wakeup to backup regularly. Often, when a hard drive crashes, there are no warning signs and then it's too late to be thinking about backups.

They say that even old dogs can learn new tricks (and with regard to the females of that species ... well ... we won't go there!). But ... how about putting those mouses on probation for a while, folks? Just think of the brave new accomplishments that might be achieved! I suppose there could be an interference problem. I don't know the frequency band that your mouse uses, but did the problem start after you added a piece of electronic gear that uses electromagnetic waves, say a new cell phone, a portable house phone with base station, or a new server for internet use? Maybe a nearby neighbor has added a boost to his modem/server. Perchance do you have blue-tooth equipment running? Check your mouse instructions pamphlet. Does it have a choice of frequencies on which to operate? If so, try changing channels.

What type of Mouse is it, Ball, Optical or Laser? If it's an Optical or Laser, you may try cleaning the lens on the bottom of the mouse. BTW, Yes Rechargeable Batteries do go bad and need replaced, but to me it doesn't sound like the batteries. If by some chance you have a mouse with a Ball in the bottom (Old Style Mouse), there are 3 Rollers inside that may need cleaning.

Every so often I pull mine apart. Amazing how much lint and dust get inside it.

Also, if the rough side of mouse pad works better, then just use that side instead.
