Mouse problem

Dell laptop, XP with a MS optical intelli wheel mouse connected to one of the USB ports. I have been using this for a few years without problems.

Suddenly I keep loosing the mouse, (it just stops working) pad on laptop continues to work. I have changed USB port and the same thing happens. In my control panel I have listed MS intelli point 6.1. Sould I removed this and reinstall the mouse? I do not want to removed something I shouldn't. I attempted to look for driver updates but didn't understand which I should click so I came here. Any assistance is appreciated. TIA

Have you gone to the mouse control and reset the pointers? Click Start, Control panel, Mouse.

Sometimes crud can form on the base of your mouse, have you tried cleaning that off with a damp - not wet - cloth. Perspiration from the wrist and hand can stain the mouse pad causing the erratic mouse movements at times. My latest mouse pad is white so it is showing very clearly.

That was my first sign of trouble before my computer crashed. Never found out what the problem was.

Rats in Brooklyn. Who woulda thunk it?? And all you did was leave the door wide open day and night. Really? I co-managed a supermarket in Flushing one summer 41 years ago. We didn't dare go into the basement food storage area after 4PM, as that was when the rats came out. The owners didn't care to spend money on exterminators--until the Health Department closed the store down one morning. (You'd think they take a little something to look the other way. This was the Rotten Apple.) If what you saw was so small you couldn't ID it, it was likely a mouse. Standard neck-snapping rat traps won't work well, as they won't trigger with the light weight of a mouse. So close up all entries to the cellar. Especially the doors. If it's rats, you have a wide choice of inanimate elimination methods--poison, neck snappers, live trapping, glue boards and electrocution. When we lived in rural Ohio, we had a rat terrier. In downtown Toronto, a brace of cats were good for the occasional mice. Reminds me, time to check the garage traps for last night's stray Mickies. Are you using your mouse on a shiny surface? Have encountered completely erratic behavior for some mice that way. Put a piece of paper underneath and see if it stabilizes. Are the drivers completely up to date? Have you tried another port if it's usb? Finally, is it connected usb and ps/2? Try only usb. Those are some of the issues I encounter regularly with wireless.

I have your answer. I have seen it all and every mouse trap gimic made. This is what works fool proof. You need a old fashioned wooden based mouse trap with the spring loaded bar. You need the trap also that has the small brass or steel catch that curls upward in the front of the catch plate. Now take a piece of Nacho Cheese Dorito chip and break off a piece the size of a nickle and wedge it under the curl of the catch plate keeping as much intact as possable and not hampering the trip of the trap so the mouse needs to tug on the chip to get it loose. The point then is to feed them where you want them to go. They cannot resist the smell of the chip. I recently fired up my trap again and cought 5 mice in 2 days. I have 1 trap the has 16 kills marked on it and another that has 7. Be sure to check about every 3 hours and rebait as needed.

What type of Mouse is it, Ball, Optical or Laser? If it's an Optical or Laser, you may try cleaning the lens on the bottom of the mouse. BTW, Yes Rechargeable Batteries do go bad and need replaced, but to me it doesn't sound like the batteries. If by some chance you have a mouse with a Ball in the bottom (Old Style Mouse), there are 3 Rollers inside that may need cleaning.

I did clean it. I shall try to change a setting on the mouse. And stargazzer you have really caused me concern now. Perhaps I should begin backing up stuff.

You may just have a corrupted driver or a mouse going bad. Delete the driver and reboot the computer. XP should find the right driver and reinstall it automatically. You could also try a different mouse and see if it has problems or not.

I doubt this problem is a symptom of a failing computer, especially since the mousepad continues to work, but this should be a wakeup to backup regularly. Often, when a hard drive crashes, there are no warning signs and then it's too late to be thinking about backups.

Kudzu, thank you. Do you mean the whole program, Intelli Optical mouse 6.1? Otherwise I have no idea how to delete the driver.

Go to "My Computer" (usually an icon on your Desktop) and right-click on it. Choose Properties, click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Down the list there is a line that says "Mice and other pointing devices". Expand that tree by clicking the + sign. Now right-click on the entry for the mouse that's acting up and choose "uninstall." Then reboot. Don't worry. Windows will detect the mouse during reboot and should install the correct driver.

kudzu, thank you very much, it apparently worked. I followed your directions this AM and this is the second time on the computer without mouse problems.

this may be a good time to look into creating a back up strategy for your computer. Backing up your data only or getting an imaging program and backing up everything including your operating system, which is the safe way to go.
never wait till it is too late. There are even free image software available.

kudzu, I may have spoken to soon. About 9:30 PM I was shutting down and the mouse went again. It is okay so far this AM.

How old is the mouse? Can you borrow a similar one from a friend? That way, if you continue to have problems, you can switch between mice to see if it is a defect in your mouse only or it's a software/driver issue that affects all mice of that design.

hum I replied and my reply disappeared oh well,
you can back up to cd/dvd, external hard drive, flash drive there are various options you may use for your back ups.
