Unicorns and.....cake?

I found this cake on the internet and wanted to bake it for SOMEONE'S birthday. However, Madison wanted Spider Man and Maci wanted a "farm" cake and Makayla required sparkles and Bud needed race cars. (sigh)

Elery's son, DIL and their three kids spent the weekend last week, we were their sleepover spot for a ski weekend as we're less than an hour from the place they like to ski.

Anyway, Jillian had her 7th birthday while they were here, so she got the Unicorn cake!

I wanted to make a mixture of pink and white, because Jilly is kind of a "girly-girl" and all the kids in that family like plain white cake better than chocolate. Yeah, I know it's wrong, but they do, so I got one of those plastic inserts to make a checkerboard and made a strawberry and vanilla checkerboard. Kind of. I found that those plastic inserts really work best when you buy the pans that they actually fit in, LOL, but it was kind of checkerboard...

Madi and Maci were over the day before and so they "helped" me by making the extra batter into unicorn cupcakes:

Anyway, this was another of those super easy cakes to make. The horn was a "snake" of yellow fondant wrapped around a skewer. The ears were cut out of fondant, skewered onto a toothpick before they dried and painted with a bit of pink food color. The eyelashes were just more fondant and the "mane" was random swirls of buttercream from a large star tip.

So, in spite of my failed checkerboard, the cake was eaten and enjoyed with hot chocolate after snowboarding.

I always love your stories and photos! Really glad you finally made it -- it's a super cute cake and I like the random way the batters mixed together. I hope the birthday girl loved it!

I love your stories and your pictures!! The girls have to know that you're going to be whipping out a camera when they come over! :-)

Your cakes are always fantastic, even the so-called fails.

Well, no matter what the cake looked like, it was gobbled up with hot chocolate, then the next day for dessert with ice cream. The weather was nearly 50 and the snow was becoming ice and pools of water, so although the snowboarding wasn't great, the cake was all eaten. There was some mention that not enough calories had been expended to make up for those consumed, LOL.

Plllog, I'm a failure on making cakes shaped like animals, this was so much easier, without all that cutting and sculpting. An artist I am not, I'm just a baker!

Jasdip, it's never a fail when it tastes good, but it was definitely not what I expected it to look like...

PM, if I hadn't already told them it was supposed to look like a checkerboard, I'd have just called it "marble", LOL, but I was ready for the big reveal. And it bit me back, of course.

oops. I can see why the lack of a checkerboard was a failure then.

So now I'm curious... who makes your birthday cake? and do you get to choose what it is? :o) I think I'll make a birthday cake for myself this year... I've had too many years without one!

PM, I don't have birthday cake, I get to make my own treat and it's usually my favorite, lemon bars. I don't make them otherwise, because no one eats them except me and I eat them ALL. I did find an exceptional gluten free recipe, better than my regular recipe, and so now Amanda shares them with me, but I still bake them myself. None of the kids like them. Too bad for them!

AnnieB., I believe in magic. I even believe in unicorns. But there's no way you'll ever convince me that kids don't like chocolate. Ridiculous!

The cake turned out cute, and the kids loved it. You should've told them the unicorn was busy chasing rainbows, hence, the marbling effect.

Gosh, those girls are growing so fast. And their Grandma is teaching them so much.

I really like your cake, even the failed checkerboard. Its a nice combo of the two flavors.

Sol, my friend, I'm happy you're here again!

You too, Olychick, I don't see you very much either.

Lizbeth, I especially liked that cake because I like buttercream frosting, and the kids usually want fondant. They actually eat that vile stuff! Ugh.

Madonna, they are growing quickly. I've got to take every chance I get to play with them before they grow up and Grandma isn't fun any more!

Am I the only one who finds this post rather X-rated? :)

L, get your mind out of the gutter, LOL. I didn't think anything either, until now!

If I didn't know better, I'd think you'd been hanging around with Evil Jessica. (grin)
