I'm growing Black Futsu this year (like I do every year) in a raised bed, and it is struggling. The well draining soil and intense, prolonged heat as donnabaskets says, is taking its toll. We've had no break, no "real" rain...the squash I have planted in mostly (but not totally) clay that is heavily amended and very well mulched is doing super. ( have mulched the stuff in the raised beds too, but the exposure to weather and sun is different) the clay is holding the right amount of water for a long time and I've seen little struggle with the ones in the ground so far.

Soupaman, I use a single square foot for my squash and zuchinni. If it is a vining variety, then I use a vertical square. If it is a bush variety then I to use an outside corner square and let it grow out over the walk area. In the adjacent squares I plant leaf lettuce or something else that would appreciate some shade in the summer. Another option is to make sure that what you plant in the adjacent squares will be harvested or ready to harvest by the time the squash grows large. Normally I only plant one squash plant per bed since each plant can be very large. However, one year I was trying several varieties of squash to see which ones I liked best. I had squash growing in all four corners of a 4x8 bed as well as a couple in squares on the long sides. I planted most of the squares adjacent to the squash with bush beans. The beans kept producing even though they were partly covered by the squash leaves. That bed was a green jungle but very productive. I would hunt each morning for squash flowers to pollinate and squash to harvest; I would also search under the leaves to remove the reddish eggs of the squash vine borer. Each day after work I would search for green beans to harvest. That year we had squash and green beans nearly every day during the harvest season, dried squash chips as snacks, and the green beans I blanched and froze lasted until December. I suppose you could plant the squash in the center of a 2x2 area but I have never found that necessary in order to get more squash than I and my family need. I still had plenty to give away, especially during the year of the variety trials. Since I searched daily under the leaves for SVB eggs, I had very few of the larvae get into the vines. momj47, THANKS for the recipe...that cake looks amazing! I keep wondering though, who has 10 cake pans?!! virginia, it sounds like you made special plans to me. Working in the yard is a plan (which is mine this weekend); about whether or not it's special I guess depends on how you feel about it when it's done! gibby, your cooking plans and lake weekend sound fun. Enjoy all that good food! I had a dream yesterday morning we bought a lake place (without a boat), and it was across the street from the lake. I remember thinking I liked the view until a car drove past to obscure it for me. I guess that tells me if I ever get the opportunity, what NOT to do! eileen, Yumm! I may just have to add potato salad to my menu for the weekend. It sounds delicious, especially with my ribs. terri, I'm not finding any good strawberries yet since ours are mostly shipped in, so I'll bet it will be Father's Day for us too. Have a wonderful and tasty holiday! (I love the idea of London Broil.) My closest TJ's is in St. Louis which is a four hour drive for me. Obviously I haven't made that in an while! Total crop loss last year from what I have read. But there are many other varieties of kabocha seed available. Why is Cha-cha so imperative? Sunshine is more productive and less prone to problems. So are Red Kuri and Sweet Mama. Dave

Kabotcha Japanese pumpkin. That's what they use in tempura mixed vegetable in Japanese restaurant.

I am very familiar with kabocha, I am growing what was labelled as kabocha now but it isn't a true one, I think it is actually just a buttercup squash as the blossom end is different and the vine end is more squared on the shoulders. I lived in Japan mostly for the last 16 years. Besides Japan I was also living part time in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Hong Kong but have visited every country in Asia multiple times. If there are any Asian vegetable seeds you are trying to track down let me know, I can always ask my friends who visit me to bring them or my ex-wife (she is in Japan) to send me them it just may take sometime to get the seeds. I just received very good soybean seeds (edamame type) from her as well as Chingensai (a Japanese variety of bok choy) and Horenso (a Japanese variety of spinach). Also if it is of assistance I speak, read and write in Japanese.

Can you send me your list and I will let you know all the items I am interested in, I have more I need to add to mine as well this week once I finish drying more and get more of the bulk seeds I ordered in. What part of NJ are you in? I grew up on LI and in NYC but spent time in Jersey with my friends who lived there. I now live in upstate NY.

Gregory, very impressive! I am a transplant from Hong Kong. I go to HK time to time to visit family. I purchase seeds from this wholesaler in Central, near the Macau ferry terminal. I will put a list together for you later. Stay tuned.

I love Hong Kong I still have an IT company there. HK was my favorite city actually in Asia and I loved the outer islands. I was there off and on a lot. I had a place in mid-levels but I was always in new territories and on the islands. I am American but I actually avoided hanging out with expats there as I am totally not the banker type at all. I used to always visit Macau as well so I am familiar with where you are talking about. I remember there was a good hydroponic shop near them that was well stocked with seeds that I would sometimes bring back to Japan with me to grow. In Japan I have a house (my ex has it now) in Yokohama. I had a greenhouse on the roof deck and a large garden in the yard. How long have you been in the States?
