Feeling Squished about My Squash

ptcwill

I'm a first time SFG this year and am disappointed with the results from my squash (yellow and Zucchini). I had beautiful green foliage and blooms but yield was small. Four weeks after production started, the base of the plant became a mealy wet sawdust consistency and the plants died. Any thoughts on the culprit and cure.

Also, I had a great learning. My first two boxes were 1/3 compost (store brand manure $.98/40 lbs.), 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Vermiculite. The plants grew amazingly.

I cut back by 50% on Vermiculite in the remaining boxes and made up the difference with Black Cow ($$$ cha-ching)thinking the plants would perform far superior since I had spent extravagantly on their domicile. The plants under performed and stayed a greenish yellow.
