Is my built-in fridge built in right???? (pix)
Comments (26)labradoodlelady--I doubt that the kitchenaid specs would tell the KD to put space on each side of the frig so that the doors would fully open. That is (to me) what should be a common sense piece of knowledge to any KD that knows what they are doing. I also do not think it was your responsibility to make sure this happened. If you put a frig in a corner with a full wall in the way, without a space on the side of the frig, will the door open any further than 90 degrees? No, in fact it will not even open 90 degrees, because the frig handle will keep it from opening even that far. This happened to me in my last house and I could not get my freezer drawers out to clean out the freezer side of my frig without pulling the whole frig out from the wall, so that I could get the door fully open! That is why this thread struck such a chord with me. I was stuck with that situation as there was not much we could do to fix the problem unfortunately. I hope you have better luck than I did....See MoreQuestion on fridge hole dimensions for resale, please help
Comments (8)Look up the installment specifications for several 36" wide refrigerators on manufacturer websites. I think you will find that most manufacturers require more than 36 inches for clearance. One would assume that refrigerator sides are straight...they are not....they often "bow out." Spacing on the sides and back is also required for circulation and warrantee. A 36 inch opening may be too tight to slide a regular "36"ish" fridge into...it might not fit!...See MoreBuilt-in fridge panel - what's wrong with this?
Comments (5)Oh My Goodness- we had a VERY similar issue with our installation of our Sub Zero. Are you on Long Island by any chance? My advice: start raising hell with the appliance store as well as Thermador. Here's why: Basically we went with an installer that the appliance dealer recommended as you did. Ours did not know what the %*@# he was doing from soup to nuts...He left the refrigerator sticking out as yours is. He claimed the moulding/trim pieces (which creates the seamless run between adjacent cabinets and refrig) were bent. I didn't know any better so I believed him and let him leave with about 90% of payment...Long story short he just was not interested in finishing the job- lots of other issues- he actually did not know that the TOP moulding peice actually is what makes the refrigerator start running and getiing cold, so we thought we had a lemon--we finally had to call SZ and they sent out a technician who informed us that our installer did not know what he was doing and luckily the motor did not get burnt out from his incompetence. UGH!! I'm still angry after two years. Anyway, the "high end, exclusive" applicance store takes NO responsibility that they are recommending a hack. Call Thermador as well and tell them that the dealer/store is recommending someone who is botching installations. Also let the store know that you are telling Thermador about this situation. Good luck!!...See MoreHelp! Built n fridge hole wrong dimensions!
Comments (17)So back up a sec. The house is fully paid for - every red cent? or not? In a typical situation, sub contractors are paid from the builder - hence the name "sub". So the builder goofed and if there is any money not paid to any sub then you have some leverage. You should not be paying subs. And just because the sub that goofed may have been paid, the contractor (GC, builder etc) should make it right. The depth has to be fixed. The granite is expensive so you want to preserve that. You want to pull the cabinets out and put a new wall behind the granite. It looks like a total cabinet reinstall which is about a day's work or $500 around here. The new wall is just some drywall and paint - $100 or $200. This kind of stuff happens all the time. It is why you have a GC handle the specs and delivers them to the cabinet installers. The cabinet installers are not rocket scientists (sorry just generally). So typically a GC will supervise the install especially with a built in fridge. You probably got a crew that is not used to built ins - but that is the GCs responsibility. I'll repeat - it doesn't matter if the cabinet installers have been paid. The only thing that matters is if the GC has been paid in full. GC's make mistakes and eat the cost. They probably have a certain percentage they plan on using to fix mistakes. Now if no money is left and they don't fix it - you should be signing up for angie's list and getting the BBB's website directions. You could forward those things on to the builder if you need to....See MoreOne Devoted Dame
