What do you do to keep your gardening groove off season?
Comments (21)Hey Anniebert-- To clarify, I do most of my gardening in PA (Adams County) zone 6, north of Frederick by 40+ miles. The rest I do in Westminster, MD. I've lived here in MD 5 years and have gone by the wisdom of the local plant nursery (Bowmans) more than by Victory Seeds' frost chart--which most of the links on Google guide one to. Here in Westminster, the common wisdom is to wait until May because the last frost of the season is fickle and can occur right up to mid-May. So we wait to put tomatoes in by that date. Now up in Adams County, also considered in the MidAtlantic zone 6, an examination of the actual last/first frost/freeze records from 1972 to current show that the last frost did not occur sooner than April 20th, but is mostlikely to occur the second week of May--even up to May 20! April is more of a freeze month and we have even had freezes up to May 28!(1994) So, in either place, I wouldn't dare go by the last frost dates you gave! I hope this explains my position and why I was wondering about your "sanity". Haha. :-) As for starting plants from seed--every year I tell myself I am going to get the cold loving flowers like Stock begun in time. I hope this year I can break the pattern of not getting to it in time!...See MoreCold and Flu season are here - tips.
Comments (6)Pam, last year I got one and I cured it with Aveeno's product. It killed that thing within one day - I was amazed. I even started a thread here for sharing products that work. Terri, I don't worry about bacteria - I worry about viruses. And I wouldn't exactly call it worry. It's prevention - flu epidemics have killed millions of people in the world. It's different than using anti-bacterials, which I don't. Using Lysol to kill viruses on a doorknob is not making that virus any stronger or more resistant....See MoreDo you keep 'emergency' gifts on hand?
Comments (25)If I get a really good buy on something, I will stash it in hopes of being able to use it as a gift, but it has to be something that I like too, just in case I don't have anyone to gift it too. Like Wally World had the gift basket bath sets on sale after Christmas-regular price $10, on sale for $5. I bought 3 of them (all different) hey everybody I know likes them and if I don't gift them I will use them myself. Also the school kids sell the Home Interior candles as fund raisers at a really good discount and so I help the school by buying them and then I put them in my stash box for gifts or for myself. When the school sales cookbooks I always buy 3 0r 4 - who doesn't love to get a school cookbook? Needless to say my stash box is running over and that is fine by me....See MoreDo you accumulate a lot of stuff or do you keep things purged?
Comments (31)We moved out of our house last year for a gut remodel of our kitchen, refinishing of main floor wood floors and replacing upstairs carpeting with wood and painting of walls & trim throughout. We were able to store some things in our attic during this time, but all our furniture was in a storage pod. It was exhausting cleaning this place out. Not the big stuff, but every closet, cabinet and drawer. We had just cleared out my parents' home of 30 yrs. when my Mom passed and set my Dad up in an apartment nearby. So our energy gauge was depleted from the start. We had to do it, though, as I'd been without a working range for 2 yrs. and the refrigerator had begun to fail. I swore I would never, ever buy anything else for the house that wasn't essential. I have always kept a clutter-free home in my living spaces, but my closets and cabinets and attic were where all the overflow stuff lived. Our DS moved overseas 6 yrs. ago so we have most of his accumulated worldly treasures in our attic. And DD has a fair share up there, too, as her little Cape has little storage. Aside from a few indulgences - like new glass pieces for my BD - I've managed to live by the "one thing in/one thing out" rule for the past year. This post is further incentive for me to keep at it ;)...See MoreAnglophilia
