Do you keep a gardening journal? and if so how do you keep it?
Comments (15)A nice "take with you to the garden" journal consists of using a recipe box (I prefer the 5"x8" size) and use two types of dividers (Alphabetical A-Z and Monthly Jan-Dec). I then file a card for each plant/tree/shrub by name of plant and also include plant detail/care/other information, where/when/price purchased, and where planted in the alabetical section. I also can place a photo protected by clear tape on the back of the card. In the monthly section, I file general cards noting "TO DO'S" that I would like to accomplish that month so I don't forget seasonal needs (fertilize, prune, etc). One could also add additional sets of alphabetal A-Z dividers in possibly different colors to use to further divide different groups (annuals, perennials, trees/shrubs, etc). You can also use the monthly section for other monthly reminders you may want to remember (birthdays, anniversaries, or special "to do" reminders). Hope this is helpful - Works for me!...See MoreDo you keep 'stew stuff' in the freezer?
Comments (14)You betcha! We have packages of stewing pork in the freezer from the feral hog we were given (dead, headless and footless, and cleaned out, thanks be!). I am not a good butcher, so after I cut off all the recognizable parts, we had a lot of good meat left which makes a great hunter's stew. I save chicken carcasses (chickens I do know how to cut up) and make stock, then use any meat I can salvage for Brunswick stew or a good soup. We have our own veggies, and believe me, after you grow them you don't waste them. Any left-over veggies go into the stock pot or a soup. I won't mention the bag of beef bones waiting to turn into stock . . . ....See MoreWhat kind of stuff do you keep on hand for cold/flu season?
Comments (16)Make sure you take lots of Vitamin C. Wash your hands often. Cough into your elbow. Sneeze into your elbow. Or a Kleenex. Drink lots of fluids. I don't buy any cough meds until I get sick (I work in a drug store. I should be sick all the time. I had a runny nose last month. It lasted 3 days. Can't remember the last time I was actually sick.) Anyhow, I don't take anything until I know my symptoms. I won't take a medicine with Tylenol/Advil in it if I don't need either. I won't take a medicine with any drug in it I don't need. Having on-hand medication doesn't help. If you take the wrong medication, it won't help you. It's best to see a pharmacist, explain your symptoms, list the medications you're already on, allergies, etc., to him/her and let him/her decide which is best for you at the time....See MoreDo you put off/delay doing things you'd enjoy doing?
Comments (22)Turning 60 last summer definitely put me in a very pensive frame of mind. I'm still struggling with questions of what defines me, how will I transition from a job I've loved but which is now winding down (at least I'm winding down emotionally but still attached) and now with the time schedule of when can we move down to the retirement home that gives us so much joy we want to retire every Sunday when we have to leave and come back to reality ;). And most of all I'm facing the shock of realizing that what I've always considered a physical gift was really a sneaky time bomb. All my life I've been naturally slim; weight simply has never been anything I worry or think about. I weigh within 10 pounds of what I did when I was 17....and so I let myself drift along through the decades airily assuming that meant I was healthy and I certainly didn't need to get physical exercise. After all, I wasn't trying to lose weight so why bother? And now here I am sixty years old, terribly out of shape, not particularly interested or craving any kind of exercise and terrified that I'll soon be facing what others have mentioned: getting older and having my body give out on me. I know I have to get moving and yet it's feeling impossible. I hate having to squeeze in exercise by giving up sleep in the morning. I just can't face trying to break my day in the middle by going to the campus health center and sweating then coming back to the office. At the end of the day I cannot make myself go exercise, I'm tired and just want to relax.Weekends are for lounging around in paradise, not forcing myself to go run or walk or god forbid find a gym in the Florida Keys instead of enjoying the sunshine. Not sure why I'm so blocked but I have to find something physical that I like or at least can stand doing, that I can do regularly and that will keep me fit and healthy. Still trying to figure out what that is and then JUST DO IT....See Moreoutsideplaying_gw
