Crown moulding color question

I am having crown moulding installed above my gray cabinets which will be painted to match the cabinets. I am considering adding white crown moulding to go all the way around the kitchen/dining/living room but I'm concerned about the color transition between the gray above the cabinets to the white. Has anyone does this? Opinions?

We chose not to add crown on the walls with no cabinets. It is the only room in our house without it but I think it looks better. We held it up and it was bulky looking

I just posted this pic on another thread and the second is above our pantry.

I did the same thing - no crown molding on the walls. I like it that way - think having it would have added "busyness" to the room.

You may want to post your question on the Home Decorating forum. I think you'll get a lot more response. The base molding often matches the trim around your doors and windows and crown molding color can vary depending on the wall color. Posting pics of your cabinets and flooring will help. iron_city, I could remove the 1 1/2" moulding and replace it with something bigger, but finding the mahogany to do it would be very expensive. I might be able to use pine moulding stained to match. Does your crown moulding match the bookcases? That's one of the dilemmas I'm facing: do I mix stain colors? That is, how would "special walnut" crown moulding look against a mahogany stain? Never thought about painting the mortar! Need to experiment with , say, concrete stain. thanks for the idea.

ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.

I believe the crown molding has a hanging return end so I think it is proper and it’s the same as our other rooms so I do want to keep it. I just wasn’t sure I should put it in the kitchen or not. I was also thinking I could do something with the HVAC next to the stove. Maybe make add some molding and make it look like an oven hood (to give the kitchen a more traditional look) or if that would make things worse because the kitchen looks more modern. Anyway, thanks for the point about them being hung too high - they asked me if I wanted longer cabinets but didn’t mention anything about how high they should be.

Here's a photo that I had saved showing the transition from gray to white crown. I think if you keep the same profile, it will look seamless and intentional.

Thanks for all the comments! I've been scrolling through picture after picture and it seems like there are a lot of ways people do it. Crown all the color of cabinets (my least fav), white and gray crown and then only crown on the cabinets. I have till Monday to decide but I've used this picture as inspiration for my stove wall and I noticed they have two colors and it doesn't look bad IMO?

I think it looks fine with the two colors as long as the crown is the same.
