How much to reupholster a Queen Anne chair?

I have e-mailed a number of local upholstery shops with attached pictures hoping I could get an estimate. I realize there are a number of variables. The main problem is the seat cushion and arms. All I am looking for is a ballpark estimate. I would even take an estimate of ## dollars for labor, fabric runs ## to ## a yard, you need ## yards. But nothing. Not even an acknowledgement that they got my email.

I don't own a truck so I can't easily bring it in for an estimate. If the price is around what I think it is worth, I would pay to have them pick it up.

Anyone have a rough idea?

It will cost a lot due to tufting, which will also eat up fabric. Price will depend on whether existing innards (springs, strapping etc) are in good condition or must be replaced. I would estimate labor between $800-1500 plus fabric - probably 8-10 yds.

Looks to be in very good condition; minus the seat cushion could use some work, as you stated, But take it from an experienced upholster, the tufting doesn't take that much extra time; compared to a tight back. With this style queen anne wing chair with a short seat depth/height is not coil springs but either sinuous wire or webbing, not much work their. The work is going to be in the double welt, as it will takes quiet a bit. Plus when your taking off the old fabric; removing the staples its very easy to damage the exposed wood. How much fabric it takes depends a lot if its a plain solid fabric or if it has a pattern that needs to be centered. Plus it works better to cut the double-welt on a bias. When I had my upholstery shop in San Diego for 20 years I would have normally charged between $400 to $500 labor depends if you purchase the fabric from me or somewhere else. But again that's 15 years ago. Actually upholstery rates varies quite a bit, depending on where you live.

It shouldn't be a terribly hard project because the arms aren't upholstered and you only have to do the back and seat. If the underlying structure is sound, you'll only have to replace the outer fabric. That said, I'd get a few upholstery books and/or videos from the library or check out upholstering videos on Youtube before getting started, especially if you're a perfectionist, have a low frustration level, or have bought expensive fabric. There are some surprisingly good videos on Youtube, usually in 5-minute chunks. When you take the fabric off, trace all of the pieces on paper to use as patterns for cutting your new fabric. Be sure to pay attention to centering the pattern horizontally and vertically on the front, back, and seat. Use your digital camera to take pictures at every step of the way, so you'll have a visual reference for putting it back together. Good luck! Can't wait to see the finished chair.

When I clicked on the link I saw that the QA chairs are recliners. And that was the only question I was going to have for you -- whether a standard QA armchair would make a person happy who was accustomed to a recliner or glider. But you've got that covered. As for the height, I think it's fine. QA chairs are tall, and most sofas are a bit lower in the back. They don't have to line up across the room like Rockettes. I think those chairs look comfortable, but give you a more tailored look. So I think they'll probably be just what you want. If the usual user of the recliner is a man, he may want to sit in the QA chair to make sure it is long enough for him when reclined. My DH has very long legs and there are very few recliners that are long enough for him (or so he says).

My FIL use to be reupholster furniture for a living. He told me long ago prices vary. It depends on the type and cost of the fabric, if the cushions need to be replaced or not, how much stitching is required and how difficult it is to stitch together. Add in their time and how good a rep they have and that's what you pay. So it varies from piece to piece from place to place. Best thing to do is find someone with a good rep and then talk to them.

The rug...she has a puppy and went out and closed the doors in the DR, but forgot to lock the swinging door to the kitchen.
