Davis Tri-Cooeratives: SASE Seeds
I am writing on behalf of the UC Davis Tri-Cooperatives, an organization of student-run affordable housing. The Tri-Cooperatives (more commonly known as the Tri-Coops) are an on-campus student housing association providing affordable, cooperative housing to low-income students as well as students seeking housing that fosters educational and personal growth as instrumental components of safe and comfortable living. The three houses (Davis Student Co-op, Pierce, and Agrarian Effort), are primarily student-run, and exist outside the jurisdiction of the University. They are instead run by the Solar Community Housing Association, a so-called co-op of co-ops. We seek to actively support and maintain community, social justice, and sustainability through the use of organic gardens, public spaces, and community-events.
We are currently attempting to revitalize the garden after a few years of neglect coupled with the effects of the California drought. While we have plenty of open, fertile ground in need of planting, we a sadly deficient in seeds. Any seeds and varieties would be greatly appreciated, and would allow us to continue to foster sustainability through gardening.

Comments (34)This is a Pacific or Western plum (Prunus subcordata, Bentham) and it is a native species found growing wild in a relatively limited region east of the Coast Range from southern Oregon to central California. It occurs in greatest abundance in Lake and Klamath counties in Oregon and Modoc and Sierra counties in California. While the greatest concentration of the native thickets in California seems to be in the general vicinity of Mount Shasta, the plum is found in more or less abundance east and south of the Nevada line, especially in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. It has been reported as far south as Yosemite Valley. The plum usually forms thickets of small to large shrubby trees along streams in canyons, on hillsides, or in the open area of pine forest. In other cases the thickets are found on ridges which are thought to be the shore lines of prehistoric lakes. There is a general similarity in the sites on which the plum thrives and spread throughout the region, so much so that one can almost predict the location of the thickets. The largest trees are found in these thickets growing on the deeper, sandy-loam soils in the canyons where water is ample, and the richer bottomlands adjoining the old lake beds. The hardiness of the species and its ability to adapt itself to adverse conditions is typified by the scrubby little thickets found growing out of rock slides at high elevations. An occasional thicket is found, however, where drought or exposure has all but killed out the stand. The region in which the plum is native has an elevation of 1,000 to 5,000 feet, although it has been observed growing in favorable locations in the mountains of the region at elevations as high as 6,000 feet. I ordered Palermo and Wonderful from UC Davis, stuck them in 1 part peat and 3 parts pearlite, kept it damp but not soaking, and most of them have many leaves and branches. It took about two weeks for any leaves to show. Out of 10 cuttings, 3 haven't leafed yet, but I am hoping they do! Why do I hope this? Insurance! Comments (118)Susana, The cuttings seem to root real easy. Looking at my recent cuttings, the one simply stuck in the ground next to a stake in very full intense sun has already sent up new growth while two other cuttings from the same plant located in a pot and a bright but shadey area show no signs of growth. Just dig a small hole and place them in and support them with a stake of some sort. check out them scented geraniums in the background. Its amazing too see them thriving in this heat when I couldnt even keep them alive in the recent past...See Morewhat will you NOT plant this year?
Comments (59)It's funny because non of this really matters. Everyone has different tastes and everyone gets different results from growing the same plant. I do have to say that just from what I've heard here. I will never plant a yellow pear it seems to be the overall winner in the bad tomato category. Someone mentioned Paul Robeson as one they wouldn't grow again. I grew 3 plants last year and planted 6 this year. For my taste it was the best tomato ever. I also loved Kelloggs Breakfast didn't get a lot of fruit but ate them before they rotted, I guess. Just interesting to hear peoples thoughts....See More
