Window cover and paint advice for living room

I have a couple questions about my new living room. The first is what type of window treatment I should put in this window. The room is north facing so it can be dark. I want something that doesn't obscure the window like the current shade. I keep it up during waking hours. I thought of just putting in a cellular pull down shade that sits up tight. Is that too boring?

The second is my ceiling and trim paint color. I painted the floor trim and some of the picture rails a pure white but then the ceiling would need to be painted. Should I leave the ceiling and picture rails as is or paint both white? Would it look bad to have the bottom trim and fireplace pure white while the ceiling and picture rails are off white? I attached a photo of the fireplace with trim that's painted pure white and one the stair is as is on the left and the white picture rail is to the right of the stairs. Thanks!

I agree about paint color. You need curtains that are mounted on a rod that extends at least 12" beyond side of window frame on each side. It will give your window more importance and also allow in plenty of light. Even if they will never be drawn, they should be wide enough that they can be - skimpy, stationary side panels are a big no-no and cheapen a room.

The ceiling doesn't need to be the same color as the trim, but I think all the trim should be the same color.

@valinsv, thanks for your clarification of how they would work on my doors. But I think this solution still doesn't allow me to open one door up 180* and lay flat against the other, right? And that is how that door is for most of the summer. We open it all the way, then just use the sliding screen door to get in and out (and keep the bugs out.) I don't want to give up that ability, as the door just sticks right out into the room if it's not all the way open or closed. @blondie...I will try today to take a picture of the fabric close-up. It's actaully got reddish and greenish cross-threads, It's not really "pretty" close-up, but it reads a a beautiful beige when you see it. As for the decision, we have leather in the living room, and it does wipe off, but there is absolutely NO coziness factor. No cuddling in with sick kids and lots of blankets--they slide right off. It's cool year round. And the thing I hat e th most is I have to dust it regulaly because everything shows on it--ugh. We also have some of those microfiber ottomans, and those things are a wreck. They always look bad, like they need to be cleaned, b/c someone smooshed banana into it, or wiped a syrupy mouth or a boogary nose on it. And the lines they can draw in them--my sons love to practice their letters on it like a chalkboard! Now, they were not a high-quality, I know, but I'd never get a whole couch in that fabric! I did inherit 2 Fairfield chairs that I love but really need to reupholster, and I think Stainless Steel might do the trick--thanks for the suggestion :)

NafNaf--Forgive me I am not sure what is different in what you are suggesting? Virgil-- I am not good with the descriptions, but the the house sits in a hill and the sunporch is above the basement patio at least for part of it, the garage is under the house. The lot is pie shaped with the great room facing the narrow end of the pie. I have been working on this all morning and moving furniture in my current living room and measuring and graphing again to double check. Right now my plan will fit a 7.5 x 9.5 sectional facing the west wall, that wall will have built ins and house the tv. The far end of sectional will be about 8' from the TV, this is the exact set up we have in our current home and the configuration is very cozy but nice, also the "L" will be open to stairs, hall etc so not closed off. On the fire place end, I feel like I can set furniture(possibly a pair of 4' settees arranged opposite or a combination of smaller chairs and a settee) about 4' from the back of the sectional and comfortably flow between the sitting areas on the stair side---I measured with the swing of the doors etc. I am keeping in mind that yes its tight if the doors are open but that will not be often. So with my furniture arranging I realized that the slider will just not fit, its much better with large windows that open. I am thinking 4, 6' casements.

I would go with stenciled roller shades for 2 primary reasons: 1. Very few holes added to the woodwork. 2. Your trim is wonderful. Roller shades will afford you the protection you want, yet also allow you to show off the trim most of the time. http://www.annwallace.com/roller-shades/

So how would I do that on this window? It's a box window at least 12" deep with a low bench.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question, but I don't think it matters that the window is deep. You can still hang a curtain on each side of the window. The bench will rest between the panels. Or is the bench longer than the width of the window? You could definitely go with a cellular shade only, however, it wouldn't add anything to the room in terms of color or style.

Sorry! Here's a photo. I guess I never thought to put up panels. I definitely like curtain panels I just thought I couldn't do it with this style of window. I'll look around to see what there is. eta: sorry the photos are funky and stretching.

I agree with cawaps and others. Your trim throughout needs to be the same pure white color and finish. Your ceiling looks fine to leave as is. Concerning window treatments... I notice you have a heat vent just below the window. I think it would be both functional and attractive to hang pleated shears that brush the window sill. You could hang them from the top of the window or at the level of window locks. I would hang a drapery panel on each side of the window on a single rod perhaps in a dupioni silk. A stripe would look nice.

Ok I think I will go with the panels then and try the pleated sheers too. I honestly wouldn't have thought of that on my own. Thank you!

Now to find panels I like...

Good luck. I don't know if you have a Tuesday Morning shop in your area if so you might have success there. Dillard's and Penny's have a pretty good selection also reasonably priced. I hope you post a picture when project is completed. Best wishes.

Have you considered roman shades at all? Something with a pretty print to bring some color into the room?
