Can a 'self-pollinating' asian pear really fruit with only one tree

I see on all sources that the 20th century pears are self pollinating. How true is that. I am thinking of growing one in a big pot but don't need too much fruit since my house is just me, my dad, and my brother. Can I really expect it to fruit with just one tree in a pot? And if you are going to ask why I don't want to plant it in the ground, thats because there is no more space in my yard.

The first tree I ever got fruit from was a 4-1 asian pear and the only branch on the entire tree with bloom was 20th Century. I lived in the country and knew of no one else with pears trees within a mile of me. The lone 20th century produced 3-4 pears without a pollinator. So I would say yes it is self fertile. With that in mind even self fertile trees produce better with a second variety so you might think about getting two pear trees or grafting a second variety in order to increase yield. It will also stagger your harvest if you pick the right variety.

How does the pollen get from one Asian pear tree to the other, by the wind? I have never seen a bee visit any of my Asian pear tree blossoms, while I see dozens of them on my nectarine trees. I have been trying to hand pollinate them using a brush but I think I spread fireblight doing that that killed my Hosui, so am not doing it anymore. The year I didn't hand pollinate I didn't get any fruit, maybe just a coincidence? I had a Shinseki, 20th Century, and the Hosui that died. The Hosui was the best producer, making full size fruit. The Shinseki and 20Th century make tiny fruit that ants usually eat their way into from the stem end, ruining the fruit. I bought these trees from a nursery that has a no return policy so I am stuck with them.

Californian: Nectarines have a natural drop, like most stone fruits (except cherries), but there is no reason to wait for it. Thin off the smaller fruits in favor of the larger, better positioned models. The big ones are less likely to drop naturally anyway, the moreso after they have been thinned. Thin off all the doubles completely. There is no reason to try to conserve half of a double unless you have an extremely poor fruit set. It can be any stinkbug or even tarnished plant bug. I usually don't see them on the pears- more likely to see them on my peaches but the damage is much greater on pears. Deformed and bumpy pears with hard spots in the flesh. I should probably go out at night when they are likely doing the damage and positively identify the culprits, but I'm certain it is plant bugs and probably stink bugs because the damage is so much more on pears than peaches. Three seasons ago I had green stinkbugs, mostly juveniles, which aren't actually green, all over my peaches, and they were on them day and night. Stinkbugs are much more prevalent if there are wild hedgerows nearby, or between the woods and the orchard or if the orchard is growing in a seldom mowed "meadow". You are less likely to have them on your fruit if you are in suburbia with lots of mowed lawns comprising most of the landscape. I suspect many are killed every time the lawns are mowed, but also the grass doesn't offer much nourishment to them. If there's clover in the mix, that will provide food for plant bugs. They say the TPB,s leap from the clover to the fruit trees when you mow, but they are quite small. I have read the BMS wounds leave a bitter taste in the fruit, and if this is always so than it is certainly another species in my fruit, although I've seen a few BMS on fruit in my orchard.

Hello, I love the Asian pears too Missouri. I have not had a lot of luck with asians on oldhome #333 which is a semidwarfing stock but I have had some luck with #97 and at least for me it has been pretty dwarfing. This may not be the case at all for you as my soil is so poor and limy that some stocks that are very vigorous elswhere may be more semidwarf here. I'll bet that asians on ohf#87 would likely do great for you and probably be much less vigorous than trees on Betulifolia or some seedling stock. As far as multigrafted trees they should do great for you but you may have to graft them yourself to get the combo that you want. Shinko/Korean Giant on ohf#87? Sounds great to me. Oh, forgot to say I think many asians may be self pollinating but I cant prove it because I have so many varieties. Thanks, Scape

Just buy yourself a Cleveland Flowering pear tree and graft about ten varieties onto it. Here is my multi grafted 15 varieties of Asian pears on a Cleveland Flowering pear tree.

Tony, your tree looks amazing! I'm just exploring now to get into planting fruit trees in my yard. Grafting seems way beyond me, but your photos are inspiring!

It is very easy. Just go to YouTube and type in cleft graft, bark graft, or whip and tongue and cut some non fruit tree branches for practice then do the real thing. All you need is a box cutter, a roll of black electrical tape, a roll of parafilm order from Amazon or you can substitute parafilm with Saran wrap cut in small strips to wrap it. There you go. Grafting will allow you to have many variety of fruits one one tree if you don't have room for a hundred fruit trees. I got a Red Fuji apple tree with 20 different varieties grafted on it. Well happy grafting.
