Signs of Spring Buds and Pruning
Comments (17)It is near 60 today in the shade might even be 60 in the sun. Such a beautiful day that I did start my prunning. Just had to get outside and I think things will start growing quickly if this nice weather holds up. Been stuck in the house too long with all that snow in February. I am not a winter person. As I start cleaning up the garden and do the start of rose pruning I have been thinking of how great the roses looked last year. Can't wait to see them all bloom this year again....See MoreShould I remove dead branches?
Comments (6)Yes, sorry, should have stated to prune just into new wood, figured this was assumed. BUT, don't prune anything until you can assure it is, indeed, dead. Only 1 link works, the photo is sideways making it hard to see. Not very clear, can't tell what is dead (brown) and what is still alive (green). Tree does look to be in pretty bad shape :-( You're better off using a photo sharing site like photobucket.com, upload your photos, then copy and paste in the html link. Comments (9)I'm in zone 6 for those who wondered... I'd never had issues with my potted maples before...and this was my first year that I even wrapped the pot with leaves, bubble wrap and burlap for the winter months. Guess that may not have been enough with this prolonged winter.... ;-( Also my plant is on an (elevated) balcony which only exacerbates any cold conditions... There's no last ditch effort I could try...maybe like 'pruning' all the branches just above a 'knob', to see if it stimulates some new growth? I suppose I could also try to scrape the bark a bit and see if I see any green underneath? And if I WERE to see green underneath, but yet still no new buds, then would conclusion could be made then? Comments (35)Mori - one issue to consider with the roses that didn't come back (Moondance and Oregold) is the timing of when they were planted. I don't have very much luck with any planting in the fall, even big pots - I stop planting in June. In our zones, roses need to put down a good root system before the winter to survive, particularly if the canes aren't hardy and it needs to regrow from the ground. Beyond that, Oregold is a particularly weak grower, and I've never gotten it to overwinter regardless. I've had a Moondance for about 6 years but it finally faded and died this last winter and wasn't particularly robust. Blue Girl grows well for me and is worth another try if it doesn't show some life. I usually wait to at least mid-June before I decide if a rose isn't going to come back from the dead. Some roses (like Double Delight) can take that long to put up canes. Cynthia...See MoreBarrie, (Central PA, zone 6a)
