Can I add a wifi thermostat if I just have three wires?

My current thermostat (to a very old Bryant natural gas furnace with no circuit board, and no A/C) has just two wires, Rh and W. There is one unused wire in the cable sheath that runs down to the furnace, but is not attached to anything on either the furnace or the thermostat.
My new wifi thermostat requires a C wire for power. Is it possible to make the unused wire a C? Could I run the wifi thermostat with just these three wires? What would the new C wire attach to on the furnace/transformer to become a C wire?
Thanks so much for any help with this!!!
