Another Backsplash Question

We are deciding if we need backsplash and where. It is a corner sink, so less likely to have water splash around than a sink that is right along the wall. Is backsplash really necessiary? Or is it more decorative these days? We are limited on money so not sure if we need it right away or we can put it in later ourselves. Any suggestions on colors to look at? We are planning Acacia Hardwood floors, Natural finish Hickory Cabinets and the countertop is laminate, similar to the picture attached. The island will be butcher block top with sage green cabinets.

Yes, you still need one. For starters, familiarize yourself with what a bs does. A Google search will reveal easily a dozen past threads on this very subject good luck!

I had a kitchen countertop with the built in 4" backsplash for almost 20 years. The wall above the small splash was painted in a washable paint. I never had any problems with it. That is a perfectly acceptable way to go.

I recently changed out counters to a new quartz and did do a simple subway backsplash. I like it very much and it was not too expensive. The tile was about $230 and I installed it myself. My neighbor was charges $400 for her install of the same tile, but that is low for a backsplash install.

Everyone has different tastes, so my choices will reflect mine, like teacher's reflect his. You need to figure out what you like. It can help to look at your choices on a sort of a mood board, then I think you should spend some time on houzz. Search for espresso cabinets and look at the images that come up with similar counter surfaces to yours. Just browse for a while and stop when you find an image that is beautiful to you. And it'll give you a chance to come up with a budget in $/sf. Without a budget, looking for tile is a waste of time. The tiles below are possibilities I would consider. That's how mine is. I don't have a lot of exposed top edge but there are two places where there is a full course of edge exposed from the side. I suspect it's more prominent than the top edge will be in your kitchen. I like it. It's natural stone. That's what it's like. It's honest and uncomplicated. And I don't think it looks unfinished. I like the accent tiles you've chosen to go with it. I inserted black glass tiles for that bit of contrast in color and texture.

Of these two options, I like the lighter one too BUT, BUT, BUT and you didn't ask for this, I think long narrow glass tiles might be too trendy for your kitchen. Are you totally opposed to 3x6 matte or crackle tile that so many people are doing (yes, I know, also trendy but they are a better match for a more traditional cabinet style and color.) Or doing something with a unique shape but all one color - maybe grey? As the photoshop renders show, this backsplash will be very, very busy. All this IMHO. I don't want to hurt feelings. Perhaps I am just being too influenced by a designer's color blog that I have be devouring lately. another backsplash question - mixing matte and shiny

I did a matte/shiny mix, I think because I saw eam's Heath photo when I first started on this forum; and I immediately loved it. I had a 4x4 area behind my sink, visible from our living room, to tile ETA: and I wanted the tile to be the focal point. I was working with a local handmade tile company, so I had their design input about proportion. I think we just did 70 matte/ 30 shiny though. My husband laid our tile and you get it random by not using a formula. I'm hoping another poster, enzaenza, chimes in here because I think she had a professional lay her matte/shiny Fireclay tile. Heath Tile, Fireclay or my company, Mercury Mosaics, probably all show examples on their sites.

I have the built in backsplash now. Been living there 22 years, and now finally going to hopefully build new. I guess I should think about whether I want to hang anything under the cabinets and if can be attached to tile.

Since I did my tile myself I left a very small area between the top of the backsplash and the hood to put in a nail from which I have a tray hanging and there is some wood on the underside of my cabinets that I have screwed in hooks for a couple of hot pads and I even managed to hang my old paper towel holder with a combo of command strips and some support from the cabinet above. (Pic is in my "my pic" idea book.)
