How long before your CHEAP lawn tractor fell apart.
Comments (147)Here's my story: I've spent $700 bucks for 13 years of mowing. And I've been ridin' in the saddle. I mow about an acre, two or three times a month. I let the grass get a little too tall sometimes, but these mowers have had no problem cutting it down. My first was a Craftsman 14 or a 16 hp that I paid 100 bucks for. I only bought one battery in 5 years. It was probably from the 80s or 90s. The engine was still strong but the rest was shot. Time for a new one. So, I ended up calling a guy and he said "come on by, I have one for sale." He had a Murray he wanted 200 for. But I noticed a larger yard man sitting under a tree, it was a hydraulic 18 hp Yard Man that he said needed some TLC. I asked him what it needed. He said just a "little this and that." I've heard that before! Dig? I said, does it Run?" He said yes, and after some effort we got it cranked. I bought it. I just had a feeling about it. The quality stuck out. Hydraulics will last longer. I know a little something. But It was a little risky. I knew it needed a little help under the deck. I paid $225.00 for it. But 8 years later, it!'s still running. That Kohler engine is great. It's a 1996 model. It takes a little effort to get it cranked, I use a little ether and have a process, because I don't want to kill my battery with excess cranks.? I've spent $400 over the last 8 years on it. There's a pro mechanic who has put a belt on it. and some pulleys and such under the deck, batteries. I mow my lawn in 30 to 40 minutes. That saves me an hour versus the push type. Saves my back even more. My mechanic said the Kohler engine is as good as a Honda. This was a high time machine before I got it. I can just tell. But I've only put about 100 hours on it or so. I'm trying to stretch the life out by mowing only 2, maybe 3 times a month. If I mow every week, there's no need for the ether -- but I like for my grass to grow tall before cutting -- it keeps it thicker and better looking. Comments (14)OK, my sob story might fit in here...we started our total (11 x 5.5) bathroom renovation -- remodel -- moved the toilet, moved the sink, moved the shower drain, build two walls, moved a window, raised the ceiling, etc. -- on August 17. As of today, I have the "bathroom" part of the floor tiled (marble) and grouted and the "shower" part of the floor tiled -- not grouted. It has cost us a FORTUNE (around $32,000) and while the walls are double durocked (anyone else have double durock?), none of them have been tiled. The partition between the shower and the rest of the bath still has to be finished and the lights installed before tiling. My husband and I told our GC that our budget was $25,000 for the job. He is our neighbor and has done work for us in the past. The problem has many layers...He hasn't been working for quite some time because he's been caring for his elderly father. I think he's rusty and unsure of himself. He is also an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist. He'll get maybe 15 tiles laid (is that the right word?) in one day -- then tear two or three of them out the next day because he didn't like the way they dried. Last week, he came to us for more money, and we asked him to sit down with us and give us an idea of exactly what the status of the job is. He told us he think he'll probably put another 80 hours in to complete the job. He is very apologetic that it's taking so long, but he seems convinced that it HAS to take this long. He insists that this was a really tough job and that no one could have done it faster. He is an artist... We fired him -- well, we told him that the bank has been broken. We have no more money to invest in this bathroom (did I mention that this was our ONLY FULL BATH, which means my husband and I have been showering at my brother's house a block away from ours? And we have a daughter who has just started college!). Hmmm...pay for college or finish my bathroom? As you can imagine, I am in tears about this...there are so many other aspects that I haven't mentioned...I wasn't planning to write a book, but maybe I should! So, jbjust (and everyone else), be glad that you're doing it yourselves or that your job is finished. And when you get frustrated and discouraged, think of me -- and say a short prayer, would you, please? thanks :)...See MoreHow long did it take you to pack up your kitchen?
Comments (17)Too long!!! It seemed as though things came out of the woodwork. I would start packing ASAP. There is always the chance that the schedule will have to be modified and kitchen demo could come sooner than expected. About 2 weeks prior to having to demo the kitchen I went through and packed up what I didn't think I would need (food and all other kitchen items). MY DH thought I was packing too early. There is no such thing as packing too early. This allowed me to use and live with that I thought I would need and adjust what I packed if I had to. I probably didn't pack enough, but with 2 young kids I didn't want to be stuck without. I did pack all dishes and glasses and we are using plastic and paper. I am washing the plastic and recycling as much as I can. I didn't want to use "real" dishes and glasses b/c my temporary kitchen is in the basement and nothing will survive if it is dropped on the cement floor. I also have young children and wanted to eliminate as much breakage as possible. Don't forget under the sink (in my kitchen it was a black hole). I can't believe how much was back there. And most of that will have to be packed away (kept on-site in a plastic container), unless you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher in your temporary kitchen. I suggest you go to your temporary kitchen location and set up as much as possible before hand. In my case, I have placed food items in the playroom and my sink, range (the construction crew ran a dedicated electrical line so I could move the range to the basement) and fridge is in the unfinished part of the basement/laundry room. I have a large, deep 2-basin utility tub. I purchased 4 plastic tubs (using two as bases for the remaining two where I wash in one and place cleaned dishes in the other). I also have a drying rack with telescopic ends that also fits over the rinsing part of the utility sink for dishes to dry. I had my DH place a drafting table across from the sink to use as a work surface. He will be setting up another for me today. You will also need somewhere to store all your things. Since I have young children, it is a bit more of a challenge b/c they see the wooden spoon, colander, and the like as things to play with (I found a whisk in my bed). The items we are not using have been packed in moving boxes and we rented two storage containers and put them in there. They delivered the storage containers to the house, we packed them and they were removed to a climate-controlled facility. We also had to empty our master bedroom and bathroom, dining room,TV room and breakfast room. We couldn't put it in the basement, since the construction crew needs access to the basement to run pipes for the new kitchen and bath, and to deal with the furnace and the HVAC issues. We used these containers when we put our last house on the market to de-personalize the house and it worked great. What didn't I anticipate??? We are renovating above the unfinished basement/laundry room and we get dust and pieces of who-knows-what coming down through the exposed sub-flooring above. I have moved my work/prep area as far from where renovations are taking place above. I also keep everything covered. Also bear in mind how many things you plug into which outlets. Between the construction needs upstairs and the electrical needs in my temporary kitchen I have had circuit breakers trip. If you can, try to figure out which electrical socket is on which circuit breaker and don't overload it with too many appliances. Our basement is much cooler than the rest of the house so my DH went to Sears to purchase a ceramic heater (this led to the first circuit breaker tripping). Now I only have one freezer (I used to have an old fridge, but it was sent to the dump to make room for the fridge brought down form the kitchen) and this has had more of an impact than I would have thought. Though it is a rather nippy 30 degrees outside so I guess I could just put some things outside...... Other Issues: Do you have internet service and where is your router? We use wireless, however my router used to be connected to a wall that no longer exists. I had to have it relocated so I could continue to have internet service during renovation (the thought of being cut-off from GW was too much to bear...there also was that little issue of being able to pay bills). If it is located near where renovation is occurring, during construction the electrical to that router could have to be turned off and you will lose internet service. Make sure your fridge is not on the same circuit breaker as any of the kitchen electrical sockets. If they need to turn off the electrical you will end up with ice cream soup. I don't know what type of fridge you have but you might want to check on the electrical requirements just to be safe. Will you have adequate lighting in your temporary kitchen? I am sure there is more. All I can say is that so far this experience will make me appreciate my new kitchen even more. I am beginning to fantasize about the first meal I will cook in my new kitchen.... Good luck!...See MoreHow Long did your kitchen remodel take?
Comments (34): ( Forever and ever.... We started last May it feels like longer than a year. It seems like it is never ending. My DH just told me he does not like the crown molding and wants to hire someone to come in redo our ceiling and crown molding. I would say I am about 85% done. The kitchen is functional, I have had friends over but there are little details that still need to be ironed out. And sometimes I get sad about it. And other times I remind myself that I have a good excuse to visit GardenWeb kitchens. ~boxerpups...See MoreUser
