Is it better to have door casing the same as patio doors'?
Comments (2)Several years ago we swapped out a slider for a french door. We went different and matched the wood color of the custom wood valances. The door casing was left the original dark dark tone. Last summer we had all the windows in the house replaced. We decided to go with the french door color, leaving all the casings dark. The idea being some day we may get the energy to swap out the casings..but maybe not as these things tend to go. The difference does not bother me in the least. It lightens the rooms which we needed. It is curious to watch the "decorating" shows. They are all about switching the light fixtures to be individual to the room, a decorating choice...but on a recent show comparing home worth before and after renovations the decorator and realtor were put off by the lighting not all coming from the same cookie cutter family, room to room. I would think your doors would be a similar deal, a decorating/design element on the one hand and yet..should they all be the SAME on the other. Can you ever see all the doors from the same perspective? It would make a difference for me....See MoreOnce Again, French Doors or Patio Sliders?
Comments (12)I love the idea and look of French doors, but we chose a four panel (Anderson) slider that opens from the center to go from our dining area into our sunroom. They may not have quite the charm that French doors do, but when both sides are pulled open from the center they really do open the rooms and allow easy traffic in and out when entertaining - almost like taking a wall down - and best of all there is no lost space in either room. My heart wanted to go with French doors for the feeling they evoked, but my head went with the sliders for practicality. I'm pleased with the look, and I don't regret the decision at all. BTW Ours went in a new build. Much as I love mine, I wouldn't go with sliders if I were restoring a period home....See Morecenter hinged french door or patio sliders
Comments (1)I find that the patio and French doors are more weather tight and the weatherstrip is very easy to replace and can be found in more places. Andersen, Peachtree and Reliabilt are all pretty good products....See MoreAndersen patio door handle must be a better way
Comments (7)Turning photos: You could upload your photo to a site like photobucket.com which has an orientation button in edit mode that lets you turn the photo. You then save the photo, copy the html text (it should copy just by clicking on it), and paste into your post. Some of our doors have an outside handle that sticks out straight from the edge of the door frame. That lets the door open to the point where it meets the frame of the fixed panel. It doesn't overlap the frame of the fixed panel, but there is no sliver of glass showing between them. Ours aren't made by Anderson. Getting a handle made to use the existing holes but come out with a lower profile may be the best you can do. If you are satisfied with the 4 doors you don't use as doors, can the front door be replaced? You said above that you can't afford to replace all 5 but perhaps just the most problematic one could be replaced....See Moregthigpen
