Mourning a Mourning Dove
Comments (10)I hope your Dove is ok, Brad. I know that these things happen in the great "circle of life", but I always hate it when I have to see the down side of it. Unlike most people, I love bunnies and don't mind them in my yard at all. However, I also have a 100 lb German Shepherd, so you'd think they'd steer clear (neighbors on either side and back all are dogless...), but for some reason, they end up in my yard. Which is fine, because Lucy isn't that fast and has never caught one. However, some dumb-bunny put her nest right in my yard (a foot west and it would have been safely in the neighbor's yard.) Lucy found it, could smell the baby bunnies and pawed at it. I covered it (with access for mama) to keep her away from it, but she must have pawed enough to injure the babies and they died. I feel so terrible about it... I was just heartbroken to see those itty-bitty bodies. **sigh** Now I think mama has a new nest under our deck (not accessible by Lucy.) I hope to see these bunnies grow up! Denise in Omaha...See MoreFledgling Mourning Doves in my garden
Comments (11)Nice, Lisa. I like Mourning Dove, too. Sorta off topic, but I saw a cardinal feeding a little brown bump of something in the orchard yesterday. I was walking my little senior pup and the cat always has to come with us. Well, I hurried ahead and scooped up the baby cardinal and placed he/she in the tall grass before Kitty spotted it. The baby made a big fuss and spread its wings to try and scare me, I felt bad. The adult hovered nearby so I'm sure it knew where it was....See Moremourning dove

Comments (17)There are no restrictions on hunting WW doves, they are an invasive species. You can shoot/trap/hunt them anytime of year in any number. Maybe a nice stewed dove dinner is in the works? The Inca or little Mexican doves should be starting to migrate about now. I have all 3 year round here. They seem to take turns at the feeder, first the WW, then the mourning, sometimes the Inca are mixed in with the first 2 & sometimes they flock in all at once. The feeders will be deserted then every bird in Galveston shows up, then they all leave. How the heck do you NOT feed them & feed the others? Tally HO!...See Moretmc2009
