Baseboard question

We are remodeling the bedroom of our home, and it's in a beach community in Northern California. When we moved into this home, every wall was covered with vertical cedar. We removed most of it as the house was too dark. We did leave it on some walls to preserve the rustic feel of the home. We are now putting in baseboard and wondering if we should keep the baseboard (White) the same on all walls. My husband says no, but I think it will look wrong if it's not all the same baseboard. . Here is a picture of where the walls meet. I think we should continue with the white. Am I wrong? I'll go with your opinion. Thank you! (Please excuse the construction mess

Hello Theresa Riggs,

Your husband is correct in this case. The rest of the non-wood walls can have the white baseboard trim.

The wood walls should have the same cedar wood baseboard trim. Try to keep the heights of the trim the same for the visual line continuity. This trim can be a simple 1 by dimensional piece of cedar.

If you use the white baseboard trim, the wood walls will look truncated. To finish up the wood wall look, you can also run a piece of the simple cedar baseboard along the ceiling edge as well.

Not seeing all of the cedar walls, but if they are in good condition and could you leave them without baseboard just use the quarter round / shoe mounding when they meet the floor?

As it's been stated already putting anything in front of your heater will stop the heat from getting into the room. What I would suggest is to have a shorter winter drape and keep the longer drapes for the summer. A great way to create two seasonal looks and you may even want line the winter drapes with a thermal lining for greater efficiency. If that idea doesn't appeal you, consider a honeycomb blind or roman shade in your window for the winter and leave your drapes off to the side. For electric baseboard heaters check with your local fire hall as to what the requirements are for the drape to be above Ex. 8", 10", 12". Each municipality will have their own rules. *This is very important if there is a fire and your drapes where the cause your home insurance may not cover you.

I would upgrade my downstairs baseboards. Downstairs usually is the more "public" areas. And then I would hope to someday soon upgrade the rest of the baseboards (and then I would hope I get around to it).

Well, that is why I thought I'd better ask for insight. I also think it looks really unfinished, and would prefer one corner rather than two. It would look more polished this way IMHO. Why is this the typical way it is done?

Here's a link to another houzz.com discussion of MDF trim with more comments: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4533990/cheap-cardboard-like-material-for-trim-molding In my experience, pre-primed MDF has a "skin" on it that is easily damaged and not easily repaired once the base material is exposed. Before committing to a whole house of MDF trim, I'd get some samples and evaluate it for yourself.

I agree to keep the baseboards all white. I think the rest of the cedar walls need to be taken down. When you have a beautiful view any other thing that draws you eye away from it just confuses the look.
