Not a pro. How thick is your door trim? I think it would look odd if the baseboards were thicker.

We're redoing that too so I guess undecided right now

It depends on the style of the trim. For a craftsman or modern look, it's great. and with a simple bead along the top and a thin strip on the bottom (instead of regular shoe molding), it's a great colonial replica. And it's only 3/4", not a full inch.

Wooden trim is made from 1x6 (and other size) boards. The actual thickness is about 3/4 inch. One-inch MDF board will be 1 inch thick. MDF trim, however, is more like regular wood trim, and there is a Craftsman-style Base Trim which is the same thickness as wood trim.

Whatever you do, use real wood in the bathroom(s). When MDF gets wet, it swells like a sponge. A once clean, straight base edge will bulge when wet, or worse, create a wavy edge if it gets wet in multiple places. Like when a toilet gasket finally fails and the toilet tank leaks, or when a little boy accidentally pees near but not in the toilet, and that water/“water” stands for a couple hours unnoticed.

My last house was 1x6 mdf baseboard, the casings were 1x4 mdf with a simple pine backband. Painted beautifully.

I like MDF for certain applications such as panels where stability is important. It paints up nicely. However, I caution against its use for baseboards and casings which are typically subject to mechanical damage. MDF is more difficult to repair than wood and more easily damaged by moisture.

Any MDF casing or baseboard would have to be painted and repairing painted MDF would be relatively easy. Yes, MDF is less moisture resistant, but who's getting enough moisture on their walls and floors to do any damage? MDF is more dimensionally stable than wood and that's going to make your paint job look nicer longer.

If you have a chewing dog, kids on tricycles, and an aggressive cleaning lady armed with a bruiser of a vacuum cleaner? LOL........nothing looks good for very long. I wouldn't sweat too much :

In my experience, pre-primed MDF has a "skin" on it that is easily damaged and not easily repaired once the base material is exposed. Before committing to a whole house of MDF trim, I'd get some samples and evaluate it for yourself.

We have that in parts of our house. You'll need to clean the baseboards, the inch will collect dust. Also don't use in bathroom we ended up removing it from the bathroom as mopping ruined the mdf.

You need to dust ANY baseboard : ) All millwork will eventually..........collect dust.

May i recommend a big fuzzy old hand towel wrapped over the broom bristles with a rubber band? Then........keep on walking lol
