Help! First Timer: Need Winter Plant Tips
Comments (1)It is an herbaceous perennial and as such once it is killed by frost in the fall you can cut it back to a couple inches above ground level. If kept in that container, you may want to keep it in an unheated garage over winter and put a snowball on it once or twice a month for just a little bit of moisture. Don't let it become a block of ice. tj...See MoreI need some Aeration help....first timer
Comments (10)Toronto is zone 8? I thought your winters were colder than that. I just found something that says the average date of first frost in Toronto is October 29. That gives you plenty of time to get your new seeding established (I'm assuming cool season grasses like KBG and/or Fescue). One step you left out is that you want to mow your lawn as low as possible before seeding (I would do this before aerating). If you're killing the lawn, you can do it all at once, but if you're trying to keep what you have, you want to mow it gradually shorter. You may need to mow it gradually shorter even if you do kill it so your mower doesn't bog down. You'll also want to rake up all the clippings to improve soil contact. Some people add starter fertilizer a week or two after seeding. The final fertilizer application should be about 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1000 sq ft (about 5 kg per 100 sq m). If you have a 10 lb bag of 10-10-10 (the first number is the one you need to pay attention to), that supplies 1 lb of actual N. Since you have clay soil, you can use a fast release fertilizer. In sandy soil, the late fall fertilization should be slow release to prevent leaching into the groundwater....See Morefirst timer needs help with indoors
Comments (1)poor "peppy". I say you go to walmart and buy yourself a clip on ligh fixture or something similar that holds a regular sized light bulb and buy yourself a 60W or 75W grow light bulb, put "peppy" in your room and provide artificial lighting (see above). Keep the light on at least 10 hours a day and peppy should be fine. good luck....See MoreIs this normal for a Peony? Help needed for first timer!!
Comments (1)Growth is curled because of the bag confinement, but it will straighten out if placed in ground soon. Better to post in main peony forum. I think people seldom look at the gallery....See Moredigdirt2
