Baoshan China wild berry

Some friends of mine were traveling through China and while hiking in the jungles of Baoshan their guide showed them a small edible fruit. They said it tasted sweet, like it was made of sugar and not much berry or fruity flavor. They did not take a picture of it. When they got back to the states they noticed a fruit in a plant catalog of mine and said that it looks like the fruit they ate in China. The catalog showed a new form of Buttonbrush, Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘Sugar Shack’ which I don’t believe is edible (info online makes it sound mildly toxic). Now we wonder what it was that they ate in China. Does anyone from tropical Asia know of any wild berry that looks like this?
