Orange/Tangerine Tree?

I have a great tangerine tree, that last year decided to send up 3 new shoots. My tangerines came in like they always do in November,

but the new shoots had bigger citrus on them that were sour like lemons. I left the sour fruit to see if the would rippen but now they are even bigger like Navel oranges and are still sour like lemons. I'm so confused????

The new branches are growing from the rootstock. You will need to cut them off so the rootstock does not overtake your tangerine tree. Look for the graft line and cut any branches off that are growing from below it. It looks like from your picture that the three lighter colored limbs are rootstock.

You have sour orange rootstock; and those new shoots are from there. Unless you particularly like sour oranges, I would cut them off at the ground and watch for new sprouts. The rootstock "suckers" are only stealing energy from your mandarin ("tangerine")

That's correct, insteng. Citrus are amazingly adaptable, especially when grown in their ideal climates. I have a Rio Red grapefuit growing in the shade of a very large Pepper tree that is thriving, and produces incredibly sweet grapefruits. In fact, it is doing the best of all my citrus up in that area, and it receives the least amount of sun of about 9 citrus trees up there! Melikeeatplants, that's pretty funny :-) Had to be said. Michael, I never sprayed Papi Delbard and it stays very clean. I don't remember having any BS or PM on him. As for the throwing long unruly canes, mine grown like a nice very tall shrub with arching branches. Looks very proportionate, not unruly.

Several factors can be involved: 1. variety. Navel oranges are more likely to do this than are round oranges. Some tangerines are also worse than others. 2. age. Young trees are far more likely to do it than are older trees. In the case of Navels, they nearly always make some dry fruit for the first 5 years or so. 3. rootstock. The more vigorous the rootstock is, the more likely the tree will be to make dry fruit. 4. water and fertilizer. Efforts to "push" the tree to extra growth with an abundance of water and fertilizer will exacerbate the problem. 5. leaving the fruit on the tree well after it reaches maturity. When combined, each of these factors makes the others worse.

Thank you both so much for your help. I'm going take your advice and cut those three shoots off. One last question; I live in Jacksonville, FL. Is it too early to trim back the entire tree?

Citrus can be pruned almost any time and to any shape you like.
