Pam, I, too, read it for a group discussion. I didn't think it was padded, but one of our number thought she saw an editor's touch and felt it was very much a check-list kind of memoir. I did not. I thought it was written as unsentimentally as possible. She didn't judge her parents and she didn't wallow in the misery of her upbringing. I've actually known a couple of people not so different from the author and the stories were very familiar to me. The hiding out in the bathroom to avoid other kids seeing that she never had food for lunch made me ache because I remember my friend telling me the same story. (Said friend has turned into a workaholic who brings home a seven figure income, but she still struggles with the issues.) Another friend depended upon the goodness of school friends and their mothers to survive and she went on to get a couple of ivy league degrees and a successful career, so that part of it was entirely believable to me also. People can overcome their beginnings and thrive. In short, this all rang true and unexaggerated to me.

I did notice that my Violet’s Pride had some blackspot the first spring after planting it in a large pot,(as you can see at the beginning of this thread). I never had a problem with that again, but that was also the spring CA had a record rainfall. I can see that Violet’s Pride might be a bit susceptible to blackspot, since I didn’t see that on any of my other roses. Since the spring of 2017, we’ve been extremely dry here. VP never showed blackspot again, but we really don’t normally get blackspot here. I recieved a second Violet’s Pride in my Spring Hill “Rainbow of Roses” collection. I planted that one in the ground. I gave the potted one away. It’s doing fine in hot Bakersfield, CA. The one in the ground blooms quite a bit, even in the heat of summer. Abraham Darby has become intwined with her. Although she’s pretty, she’s not really a favorite. Sometimes the color can be a bit blah in the real heat. I’m grateful she hasn’t tried to take over more than her allotted space, as many roses in my garden tend to do. A fine rose, but she never turned out to be one of my big favorites. I have 3 full grown lavender roses, Violet’s Pride, Love Song, and Poseidon. I like the other two quite a bit more than Violet’s Pride. I just like their blooms and colors more than Violet’s Pride, but that’s just my preference. She’s given me no trouble. She just finished up a flush, but I think I see one peeking out from a piece of Abraham Darby. It’s just barely getting light outside, so I’ll see if I can get a picture. She definitely looks washed out to me at this time of year. Compaired to Love Song this morning. And to Poseidon this morning. Lisa
