Questions on planting Jade plants
Comments (18)Oh yeah, I did get both. I couldn't say no to the first one after he cut it so I told him I wanted both. I paid a pretty penny but they were both worth it. I was actually able to get a pretty tall cutting from both. I literally came back upstairs after rigging the 20" so that it wouldn't lean/fall over. I'll post a few pics tomorrow. I couldn't find sticks anywhere in the house and there weren't any usable branches outside. There are leaves everywhere but no branches that were useful. You might actually laugh when you see how I did it. Again, I'll post the pics tomorrow. Thanks for your idea though. I'm going to have to stock up on those tongue depressors/popsicle sticks though....See MoreJade plant soil question
Comments (20)Ok. I just repotted one of my jades in the gritty mix. (pics to come) I removed as much old soil as possible under the sink with the sprayer and then let the plant sit outside for a couple hours to dry out a bit. I couldn't remove all the old soil, but I got most of it. I was afraid that picking at the roots would end up damaging the plant. The major roots are still there but I lost some fine ones in the process. I had to put some rocks in the pot to support the branches as the gritty mix doesn't seem to compact as well as typical soil. Here are a few questions: I guess the next step is to wait a week and then begin normal watering??? When can I first fertilize this plant? Should I place the plant in it's normal sunny spot. I have east and south facing windows. Any one better than the other? Should I expect the plant to go through some shock, dropping leaves or something similar from the repotting process? Thanks for the help. I have about 5 other jades to repot. iso...See MoreQuestion about Miracle Grow Potting Soil and planting...
Comments (5)We have red clay in GA. I always amend the soil with composted manure and a good amount of soil conditioner before putting in any plants, and my plants have done fine. Because it is so hard to get very deep in this clay, I tend to put my plants in raised beds to help with the drainage, otherwise, the clay gets compacted and doesn't drain well, which then puts the tubers at risk for rotting. I've planted peonies in potting soil and kept them in pots to give them time to mature and they have also done fine. I've never had a tuber get moldy from the potting soil. I put the tubers individually in 2 gallon pots, and I amended the potting soil with composted manure, and I also add soil conditioner to the pots to help with drainage as well. I've left them in pots for as little as 6-8 months, to as long as 1 1/2 years outside, and this year, a Festiva Maxima that was grown from a very small tuber in a box has buds....See MoreJade plant falling over in pot
Comments (8)Jades can be grown in pots that look too small, but I agree that toppling over can be a problem. I like to use azalea or orchid pots - shorter and wide. And I do like to use rocks to prop a plant up until roots are established. On smaller cuttings that I am trying to root, I may pile something like pea graves around the stem to hold it true. Here's an example of a recent repot of a jade that I have let go too long without a prune or repot. As for the growth rate - I started this clipping in early 2013. Here it is in a 4 inch pot - Roots were quite compact by this time. Here is what I have left of the root ball after removing damaged and dead roots. I did pot up to a 5 inch azalea pot. And the plant wouldn't stand up in my gritty mix, so I propped it with rocks. And now the patient is resting comfortably on my 'jade cart' on the lanai. There is more pruning to do, but I'll get to that soon. I do not water for 4-5 days after a repot, especially when I have to prune roots. My mix is quite gritty. Hope that helps! Your plant looks nice, so we have to keep it from jumping out of the pot! LOL...See Moreabubblingbrook
