Callings all TKOs! Seeking guidance as I start my reno.
Comments (12)Hi - Thanks for the feedback so far! benjesbride - Do you mean open the wall between kitchen and family room like in the last three plans mamagoose did? mamagoose - I was thinking along the lines of the first plan, but also wanted to move the door to the laundry over a bit to get another cabinet along the fridge wall. And extra cabinets and hopefully sink in the laundry area. My fridge is counter depth, but yes, I do plan to open that doorway up a bit next to the fridge. Although a bit hard to visualize, the more I look at it, the more I really like the 3rd plan - very open to the LR and with counter seating. I know I wouldn't have to move plumbing and electric very far, but I am concerned it would be too much $$ to flip flop the kitchen and dining area. Since I'm on a slab it wouldn't be inexpensive to move the plumbing, then once you consider venting, electric, changing out the window (so siding work), etc. it will add up so quickly. My siding is original (early 80s) aluminum siding. It needs to be painted, but otherwise is in really good shape. I don't think you can get it anymore and it's hard to work with. Any exterior changes I am concerned would morph into re-siding the whole house. If it was my forever home or if I would be here for many years, then I wouldn't hesitate, but I just don't know if it's worth it financially. I don't see myself being here more than 5 years and then it will likely be a rental. I love Martin Moore kitchens with the architechtural cabinets. He shows a lot of these shorter uppers with open shelving below it (see link). I think that might work well for me, but I don't see a lot of that done. Thank you for your ideas so far! :)...See MoreCalling All IKEA + Scherr's Folks
Comments (12)We had Scherr's paint our doors in Extra White. I do not think that any of the Ikea doors would be a good match. However, I will say that we did use the Ikea white toe kicks for our kitchen and you cannot tell that they are not a perfect match. The shadows and darkness of under the cabinet make it all fine. We did have Scherr's make our panels but I miscalculated the requirements and we ended up creating one side panel on the peninsula ourselves. We used a good piece of plywood. We have decent tools so it was not terribly difficult. Since it was just a lower cabinet side panel, it wasn't too big and was manageable. In terms of the paint, I originally bought a can of Extra White from SW in their most expensive enamel paint hoping it would match. As mentioned above, the color was not a good match. We originally painted our trim with this paint and it was obvious it was different. So I ended up taking a door to Home Depot and having them color match it on their best paint and it turned out great. For painting the side panel we bought a fairly inexpensive paint sprayer on Amazon and it did a nice job once we got the hang of using it. We did more than a few coats to get it perfect. You cannot tell that the panel we made is any different from the ones Scherr's made, and we are really happy with that result....See MoreDrop your recos/photos of Skinny Shaker or Slim Shaker cabinets
Comments (16)Reform "Frame" is tapered instead of boxy, but has a similar profile width. Also Fabuwood has a new slim shaker option. https://www.fabuwood.com/post/luna-our-new-slim-shaker-cabinet/ No personal experience with either... As far as reform goes, all three colorways look very nice in the product photography. I especially like the how the wood grain shows through on the white and blue painted options. https://www.reformcph.com/us/designs/frame-note-design-studio...See MoreCalling All Kitchen FolK!
Comments (6)another thing to keep in mind under the heading "goals"....improving the overall character of the property [assume you own]....in that no connection to an outdoor space currently is shown....how could you integrate this space w outdoor living....what is outside the windows....leave room for future "push out".....this can be executed later but something to keep in mind for an actual upgrade to the space / not very dark or glam... [I like light and natural looking ......or possibility of that where I spend time-personal preference....... think that is more universally appealing....] . maybe glam without the dark leaves more options....is that seriously how you want to spend the budget tho....as the coordinated surfaces have to be a certain quality and all work together and have enough put together to work . looking at glam kitchens maybe find elements / details you can pull in. an Inspirat picture folder usually helps you see what drives you. You can search Houzz with a phrase under search and select "photo" / dozens come up. .......See Moregreenwoodframed
