What do you do with your old mix?
Comments (27)I'm pretty sure that these people from the Huntington weren't making up science to fit their observations, Al. The person making stuff up is you withyour imaginary potting medium composition to fit your assumptions. I have found small pieces of perlite in pots after having sifted and washed the perlite. How do you explain that without breakdown or ad hominems? Many years is too long? I'm sure the folks at Disneyland might disagree. You might want to qualify that with a specific mix. Too long for pumice? Probably, but then why is that if not because of being broken down? Besides, the original issue dealt with adding medium to garden soil and an aversion to that because perlite doesn't breakdown. Something so friable as to be easily be crushed with finger pressure or mixer agitation will certainly breakdown in a cultivated garden bed or especially due to freeze/thaw cycles which can breakdown concrete. Or course we are talking mechanical breakdown not decomposition. But if someone wants to present some 'real science' proving that perlite doesn't breakdown, I would love to see it. For some reason, I think that claim probably falls in line right next to the 'sand doesn't hold water' myth....See MoreFlatware... my knives are pitting.
Comments (11)I did the same thing as you, Shee, and purchased a brand-new set of really nice Towle stainless steel flatware on Ebay. It was quite expensive and arrived looking fantastic, but I've noticed that a couple of the teaspoons have small pits. I don't think it's the dishwasher since I use it so rarely. My guess is that the seller (huge Powerseller with 1,000's of sales) somehow bought the lesser-quality stuff from the manufacturer and sold it on Ebay to trusting folks like us. Awm03's link talks about the different levels of steel quality and I wonder if, when the manufacturer discovered a particular lot with problems, they'd off-load it on the cheap to the Ebay dealer. Oh well, it's still a gorgeous set and I've only had the problem with 2 teaspoons....See MoreHow do you sharpen your knives?
Comments (19)Cheers RockPine! Great minds think alike. Just one clarification for those of you using a "sharpening" steel - your knives will cut better when you're done using it but it doesn't sharpen the blade, it realigns the cutting edge and makes it straight. It can't reshape a dull blade that's worn down. A dull blade requires a sharpener that can cut away metal and restore the 20-degree angle of each side of the edge. If all you're using is a steel, you're in for an epiphany if you actually sharpen your blades some day. My mother used to tell me "there's nothing more dangerous in a kitchen than a dull blade," and by that she wasn't referring to a dim chef :)...See MoreHow do you mix your potting mix?
Comments (7)I am thoroughly disgusted with peat. It breaks down, compresses, rapidly decomposes into a solid rock like substance unless large amounts of vermiculite and perlite are added, and that makes it extremely difficult to maintain moisture in the pots. I am watering everyday and sometimes need to water twice a day. Wick watering is not an option because of how I display my plants and also because of rapid evaporation. I need a heavier soil that does not retain moisture like peat does. Peat also is devoid of any nutrients, does not retain nutrients so fertilizing is more the art of hydroponics rather than soil based science. I don't have garden loam this being Arizona rock and sand desert soil. Any suggestions? I can get well rotted manure, blood meal, bone meal. Anything else necessary?...See MoreRelated Professionals
