Growing ornamental persimmon in zone 5
Comments (23)I do not know yet. Saiyo has allways been an reliable grower for me,providing it is in a sunny location with atleast 7 hrs of sun.My location on some of my tree's are not ideal because in the fall these tree's get shaded because i have a rather tall house standing in the way and the sun location. So in the fall i get less sunhours and it does make a difference. Because most of my persimmon are grafted on my natives growing here, the asians are coming out of dormancy between april 1 and the 15th. The ones on rootstock from Ed.L are coming out much sooner, which is something i do not want.I would say this if you live in a warmer zone that rootstock would be pretty good. It is also easier to graft to(more takes and cleaner looking joints).Later coming out of dormancy means later ripening and less sunhrs in the fall.........See MoreGiant Fuyu persimmon in Zone 7?
Comments (2)Thanks for the information, Bass. That's what I see from other sources too. I noticed your post from before and your Hana fuyu looks wonderful. Wish I can find something grow like that. To share the findings, several online articles say with lotus they grow much bigger in earlier years, but more prone to dropping fruit when young due to heavy vegi growth, and decline faster in production in later years due to the "medium incompatibility" of the rootstock with the oriental varieties grafted on. There are plenty of online or local nurseries selling them with lotus rootstock though, guess the early faster growth sells plants better. Keep on searching ......See MoreAre your persimmon growing in the wrong Zone?
Comments (11)If you are growing asian persimmon in zone 5 you are well prepaired for protecting your tree's early, unless you have a heated greenhouse, that why i don't grow fancy tasting fig's and others that need to be potted for winter protection. Most of my fig's are in ground, except the very young ones.I am not big with container tree's. There are a few more persimmon that are good but way late for my area but i have to ignore them, because i am happy with what i grow.I will try a new variety for next year. I found a way to get rid of extra fruits,i went to a potluck with a bucket full of asian persimmon, guess what, they are all gone. That was need....See MoreAnyone growing Owari Satsuma in ground in zone 7b?
Comments (25)im growing Meyer lemon and Armstrong Satsuma in ground here in bixby ok. 7a. My technique is similar and based off of the guy Dave mentioned above. 25 C9 lights come on at 38F. I added a small heater that I only use when outside is below 15. The lights can maintain about 15 degrees above outside on their own. So far we have had several nights below 10. Covering is 2 layers of white frost cloth when its below 38 but above 20. Below 20 I add 1 plastic tarp and one green frost cloth. Water bottles are there to just help buffer the temps and add a little heat. Meyer is in full bloom right now. I plan to graft Miho and Dekopon/Sumo to the armstrong. mike...See MoreKen "Fruity Paws" (N-Va 7a)
