Comments (7)The only way professional growers could raise anything is with pesticides. At least with my way, I know what and when and only use it when I see something on the plants. I don't spray tomatoes anymore and haven't for about three years. Once in a while I find horn worms and just pick them off or cut them with the pruners. No spray for disease has every worked for me with tomatoes. I don't do anything to sweet corn and the worms have not been a real problem..so far. I am finding more Japanese Beetles each day. Here is what they did with a VA creeper climbing the house....almost overnight. I do a sweep of the yard and garden daily....See MoreSlow Computer
Comments (34)Kentuck- I don't think a couple seconds spike to 99-100% is alarming. Mine does this occasionally when opening some programs or my browser. I think it's only an issue if you have a spike and it stays up there. For example, once in a while my Windows Media Player hangs up if I try to play a video at some sites and it ties up my computer at 100% until I go into the Task Manager and select it and shut it down. As for your question about what processes are essential, here is a link that lists the main background processes by their (sometimes inscrutable) names, and tells you what they do. Make sure you have the "Show processes from all users" box checked and compare the list of names. Some of the names you'll have will be processes specific to things like your antivirus, and won't be listed here. For those that aren't, just write the name down and do a Google search. (Sometimes a virus will show up in this list, although I don't think that's your problem.) As I write this, I have 53 processes in the background. I'd have more if I hadn't prevented things like RealPlayer and Quicktime from starting each time I bootup. Here is a link that might be useful: WinTasks Process Library...See MoreSlow computer/HP Image Zone??
Comments (16)perk2, You have a fine machine there. I doubt that a 100 photos are slowing you down. I agree with owbist (nothing will be served by you deleting them, they are simply in storage on your hard drive waiting for you to use) Some people have thousands of photos. My 2 cents on the slow down is either the HP image program or another program or mutiple programs are running in the background that you're not aware of. You can press Ctrl+Alt+Del and get an idea of what processes are running and using the most CPU. To check the programs that run at startup, get the free CCleaner it not only cleans your computer, but under tools/startup, you'll be able to delete entries that are set to run at startup. Basically all you really need to run at startup are the firewall and anti-virus protection. *note, with ccleaner, during the install uncheck google toolbar if you don't want it....See MoreSlow computer, yep search worked
Comments (6)Try this . . . Open Task Manager from the taskbar (R-click on an empty space at the bottom there), click on Performance and see how much memory is being used. If either the CPU or Memory line is way up at the top, that might be clue also. Then go to the Processes tab and see what's using all the memory, etc. For viewing running processes and startups, Codestuff's Starter program is pretty great. There are other ones, but Starter is pretty easy to use. One challenge is to figure out what running processes actually are, and what should be running and what not. Sometimes you can find the location of the process to get a clue. Also there is a right click link I believe that will lead to "Answers that Work" where you can look up a process by name and figure what it is, and get advice on whether it's advised to allow it to run or not. You might also want to check how many extensions and add-ons you have running for the browser you're using - too many of then can interfere. Re : Java If you had to restart either or both the computer and browser, that would have refreshed things and made it appear that Java was the fix....See MoreElmer J Fudd
