Need advice on a new washing machine
Comments (6)I had a "musty smell" with our FL Whirlpool Duet (came with the home, 6 years old now) and I did a little reading to figure out a fix. - I cleaned out the filter trap. Not really dirty. - Ran a load with white vinegar, hot water. Still a bit musty so then ran a load with Borax powder soap. Smell gone for last 6 months. - I always leave the door open and don't use cold water wash. - I see WP pushing a "special cleaning" soap for the FL machines. A bit expensive and waste of money compared to just running vinegar or Borax soap. - I was using liquid soap (cheaper) and not the special "HE" soap. I did catch Tide HE powder on sale at Target and tried it. Wife likes Tide better than the cheap soap I was buying so when she is around I use that. When she is gone I use H&A liquid. Always on sale at WM. I don't notice any cleaning difference and finally got my wife to admit she just likes the smell of Tide. Tide recently went to a new formula for their powder soaps which are suppose to be "better" and require less soap. Have not tried them yet. The cost is higher too. An article in the NYTimes a few months ago talked about how Americans have a tendency to use too much soap when washing clothes. I've played around with the amounts to use, brands, etc... Also, the WSJ had an article talking how 15 years ago all the top loading washers did a great job and the FL (at that time) failed. Now the majority of the washers are FL with few TL available. The FL sell themselves as "saving water/electricity" as the most important feature. I looked at the new washers at Sears and like one new TL machine that sells itself as the same efficiency as the FL. I would like a new machine (when this one breaks) that is about 4.3 cu, our current model is 4.0....See MoreUrgent washing machine purchase advice needed
Comments (8)As Asolo adverted to when purchasing a model that has an internal heater, purchase one where the internal heater can be used for several cycles. Samsung does have a model with an internal heater, but its sole use is for its Sanitize cycle. Larsi makes a good point about service in that Miele does have its own service techs, but MieleâÂÂs business model is such that it needs said service under its purview. Reason: MieleâÂÂs proprietary software/firmware is serviced via their service techsâ laptops. Miele business model is aligning along AppleâÂÂs: user experience. ASKOâÂÂs Designer and Family Size Laundry models (not their XXL Laundry) are made in Sweden and provide true 220V, up to 205 degree Fahrenheit water via their heating element. However, their capacity is not the standard US indoctrination and water source is only through your cold water tap only--where the heating element does the heating afterwards. The boutique brands (Miele, ASKO) have a hidden a prerequisite related to proximity based service. If you do not reside near one of their service centers/providers then no matter how good the washer or dryer, you will pay the price when servicing is required. Read all the manufacturerâÂÂs warranty fine-print and do not purchase any third-party warranties when purchasing boutique brands. I highly recommend the purchase of the manufacturer's extended warranty for these brands. There are means of better using models without internal heaters such as installing a dedicated pump-driven recalculation loop to your laundry room that can be activated through several means these days as to not waste energy when not required. There is also point-of-use water heaters (the future of heated water systems)....See MoreHelp! Please! I need to remove front panel of washing machine
Comments (4)I would say that you should NEVER tip a washing machine unless the owner's manual says it is safe to do so. Why? Because on many models, tipping it causes it to leak oil, and once it has started it will never stop. That's why when we bought our new washing machine I made sure that the front panel is removable for servicing. Caroline, you can look up the owner's manual online. Look at your machine -- lift the lid and read the stuff that's on the inside of it. There has got to be a clue as to the model name or number. At the very least, take a good look at it, and you will recognize it on the Kenmore Elite Whirlpool web site - then check the manual....See MoreOk to only use cold water hookup on washing machine?
Comments (12)thanks for the advice, after i found water under the washer while in the laundry room i removed the washer to outside and after looking inside ( after removing the front panel ) for a couple of days and not finding a water leak i put back together and moved back into laundry room and started using, it still leaked, it wasnt a visible leak outside while working on it because i never thought to look in the back of washer to actually see the water escaping from hot water side, so after finding it was leaking from valve hot water side i attatched hose to hot water port hoping that would keep the water escaping from the hot water side, i knew the valve went bad i just thought keeping water in an enclosed system by attatching hose to both ports would stop the leak, it didnt work, the water found its way from the valve itself since the hoses were keeping pressure inside , but again, the water found its way to leak, so, i ordered a new valve, it came in and it was the cheapest valve i could buy on amazon, 10 bucks, it leaked a dribble when put on and started, i began to think i got what i paid for and am returning valve for a more expensive brand, AND the cold and hot water ports are not joined or combined inside the valve in any way , two different ports with two different solenoids , i will update when i get that on, the photos of the washer drum above are horrible, it looks like well water or near a beach where water is not greatly filtered, our washer is old, 2000 model GE profile, and has always used on cold only, but ours is as clean as the day we bought it honestly. i dont know why, i dont do the laundry i just fix things that break , i can do laundry :) i rarely do, i think my mother said hot water can fade or make colors " bleed " making the whole load the same color ? i have no idea, i just dont want to have to replace the flooring in the laundry room so the washer has been moved outside on back porch again until new valve arrives, i was wondering if Jeff had any luck or ideas that i had not considered, i didnt think this 5 year old thread would still be active, i am very pleased it is, thank you....See Morekkid77
